How to Focus on Your Lane & Avoid Comparison

Every now and then, I meet someone who’s never struggled with comparison or insecurity. Or at least, they’re very good at pretending. There have been times where I’ve admitted to such a person that I’ve struggled with an insecurity or wanting to be like someone else, either in my present or my past, and only received a blank look. Other times, I’ve received a confused expression like  “Why would you worry about that?”  My response is usually to drop it like I haven’t made any confession at all, and move on. When inside I am always thinking, “I don’t know [...]

Love: Resources to Help Clarify Your Calling

At the end of August, Tony and I took a small prop plane for a seven minute ride over the ocean to the island of Inis Mor, just off the coast of Ireland. Online, I had read about its ancient ruins and the beautiful, jagged cliffs that line its shores. I wanted to stand on the edge of those cliffs and take in the view.  Only for a visitor, to get to that side of the island meant taking a tour bus or renting a bike. As we’re not tour bus people—biking it was. That morning, we stood outside the [...]

Learn: How to Find Your Why

“I went here and there and everywhere in search of my ‘calling,’ proving that this process is anything but a perfectly straight line, where one point leads predictably to the next. And while I don’t begrudge any of the wild experiences I’ve had along the way, for the simple fact that each of them taught me something I didn’t yet know, I wish I’d been able to embrace my own unique journey and avoid the bait of a you-should-do-this sort of life.” —Jessica Honegger, Imperfect Courage When I was a kid and people asked me what I wanted to be [...]

What is Your Why

When I was seventeen, I remember praying and asking God to use me for good in this world. I wanted my life to count. But I had no idea how. I didn’t fully know or understand my strengths or my weaknesses. And unlike so many of my fellow overachieving friends, I didn’t have a plan for my life. College was mere months away, and I had no clue what to major in.  I wanted to do something that mattered, but I felt lost. I share this today, because on some level, I believe you can relate. I believe we all [...]

How do we step back to take a good look at our lives, when life doesn’t seem to stop? When there’s always so much to do? And when it feels as if there’s never enough time? On Monday, I compared our lives to the peaches Tony and I picked last month. If I didn’t watch them closely—didn’t refrigerate or freeze them in time—they’d spoil. All of us have relationships, commitments, or aspects of our job that if we don’t inspect every now and then, could go sour. Or worse, go away completely. For example, how many of us put off [...]

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.  —Mahatma Gandhi Leadership Tip #18: Never Stop Learning Do you remember the feeling you had in high school or college, when you couldn’t wait to graduate? When the thought of no more tests, papers, or projects brought you so much joy? Even those of us who had a decent educational experience know this feeling. Going to school in many ways makes the learning process stressful, anxiety-inducing, and even boring.  But then, there are those teachers. The ones that help us understand algebra (mostly). The [...]

Remembering Who We Are

When I was nineteen, I took sixteen teenagers for a four day camping retreat up in the mountains of New Hampshire. To be clear, there were other adults on the trip, but I was in charge. How a church and all these kids’ parents were ok with it, I will never know. Yet, the whole trip proved to be life-defining for me.  Ironically, even as a church trusted me with the majority of its youth group, at that time I was still doubting my call to ministry. I had been told by some pretty influential people in my life that [...]

Learn: Why You Might Want a Life Coach

Honestly? I hate titles. Not the titles of books, but the ones we give each other, the ones we give ourselves, and the ones we long to have written under our names. Mostly, I feel this way because none of us can fully be summed up in one or two words. Also, the position a title gives us plays into a social hierarchy that seems to decide who matters and who doesn’t. However, titles do help people understand our professions and how we can help them. In other words, they are necessary. I share all of this because this week, [...]

Finding Your Sweet Spot

Do you know what you’re good at? I mean, how you’re really and truly gifted? When I was a kid learning basketball, I found a place on the court where I could make basket after basket. My coach called it my “sweet spot.” Do you know what your sweet spot is? That place in life where you shine? Chances are, you have more than one.  In high school, I remember searching for my sweet spots in hopes that they’d give me a better understanding of who I was. I watched as others found recognition on the field, stage, and even [...]
