One Thing We Forget About Making New Year’s Changes

I have a confession to make: My jeans don’t fit. Sure, I can still button them. But you don’t want to see what’s rolling over. I promise, I won’t go into anymore details except to say, if you see me wearing big sweaters, you’ll know why.  Slowly, over the past few years, I’ve been gaining weight. Last year was the worst. It probably didn’t help that my gluten and sugar-free standards were thrown out the window for our Team Schlies Bakery Tour of 2019. Or, that there were some other things I also let slide. But if I look at [...]

In 2020, Start Small

On Monday, I shared I was terrified the first time I climbed a mountain. Mostly, because I wasn’t ready. But honestly, I made it all the way to the peak that day. It felt amazing.  Until, I hurt my knee on the way down. Then Tony half carried me about three miles as I wobbled back to the car. We were dating at the time, and boy did that experience solidify our relationship. But it also taught me I had to get in better shape if I wanted to do it again. Sometimes, the mountains we want to climb in [...]

In 2020, Climb Your Mountain

Friend, the first time I climbed a mountain, I didn’t fully know if I was going to make it. It was so BIG. A few of the people I was with, had climbed the mountain before. And as we got ready to go, they talked about how there were some really challenging spots on the way to the top. I remember listening to them and wondering, What would I do, if I couldn’t make it? I wasn’t an experienced hiker. In fact, I had only recently begun to regularly go on hikes where I lived. My adventurous side had [...]

In 2020, Start Here

The few days right after New Years are always interesting. Like geese migrating with the change of a season, some of us flock to the nearest gym, where every treadmill or elliptical machine is taken. While others of us suffer through what I like to call the Holiday Hangover.  It’s that exhausted, “What just happened” feeling we get when the alarm goes off for our first day back at work. Or, getting back into our pajamas as soon as we come home from said job, because we just can’t. And sometimes, if we’re truly unlucky, the Holiday Hangover includes  [...]

Looking Back at 2019

About a month ago, on social media, people were posting photo’s of themselves from 2009 next to photos of themselves from this year. It was called “The Decade Challenge,” as we are all heading into a whole new decade. For a variety of reasons, I didn’t participate. But this “challenge” did make me compare my 2009 to my 2019.  For me, 2009, was one of the best years of my life. With my job, I went to both Chile and India. I climbed a mountain for the first time. I finally felt like I had a life and friendships outside [...]

Things I Loved in 2019

What will you remember most about 2019? I’m not talking about the serious, life altering stuff—though those things are obviously important. Rather, I am talking about the songs that years from now, will bring you back to your 2019 life. The TV shows you’ll binge when you are home sick one day, that will transport you back to when you saw them for the first time. The ones that will make you remember who you were with or weirdly, what you were eating when you watched them. More importantly, of all of those things, What did you love this year? [...]

He Always Comes

As we close in on Christmas Eve, I thought I'd re-share this post from last year. It's a simple message, but one that's easy to forget. Merry Christmas, friends! One of my favorite books growing up was The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. Early in the story, one of the main characters, Lucy, finds herself in a magical, snow-covered land. The first creature she meets there is Mr. Tumnus who is half man, half faun.  Though she is taken back by his appearance, he is very kind and they soon become friends.  Mr. Tumnus tells [...]

Love Learn Lead December 19, 2019

Last Friday night, Tony and I baked Christmas cookies. Then we decorated them the next day with our best friends and their kids. But in between putting batches of Christmas tree shaped cookies into the oven, we watched Home Alone on TV. Neither of us had seen it in years. Though like any movie one watched over and over as a kid, we could still quote most of the lines—and not just the iconic ones. Some movies just stick with you, especially those watched at Christmas.  This is a season rich with nostalgia and meaning. It’s a time when an [...]

The Whisper of Christmas

Underneath the hum of Christmas, some of us hear a whisper. It’s not one we hear in our ears, but rather one spoken to our hearts. Like the unexpected tug of an old memory, it speaks to us in surprising moments.  When we’re waiting at the stoplight we get caught in every day. When a particular Christmas carol comes on in a store. Or while we’re stringing lights on our tree. This whisper reminds us Christmas transcends all the “more” it has become.  Sure there is joy in all the cookie baking. We find revelry in the ugly sweater Christmas [...]

Love: Christmas Gifts Ideas With a Story

In my most idillic thoughts, Christmas shopping looks like holding a Holiday inspired latte in one hand and bags of already purchased gifts in the other. It looks like walking down a small town street lined with adorable little shops filled with local or fair-trade goods. And of course, in this beautiful dream, snow fills the air. Oh what Hallmark has done to us all.  In reality, for me and Tony, Christmas shopping often looks like a combination of long days shopping for our nieces and nephews, combined with hours scouring online for the right, age-appropriate gifts. And, as we [...]
