Leadership Tip #20: If you don’t have time for it, Plan it.  Over the past two months, we’ve been talking about some pretty important things. In September, we talked about stepping back to take a better look at our lives. To see what parts are good and need to stay, and what parts are bad, and need to go.  Then, this month, we’ve been talking about discovering and clarifying our life’s calling. Not an easy task. Not something you can do overnight. Both of these things, require time and thought. Only many of us struggle to find them in the [...]

Learn: Ways I Step Back

Ever notice how the most healthy life practices, are often the hardest for us to do? Like keeping a regular exercise routine, taking time to rest, or sticking to a healthy diet. For some reason, these actions that seem like they should come naturally, are usually the ones we must fight to maintain. As if there is something in us—or in the world around us—trying to keep us off track.  The same can be said for our schedules. Often at the root of struggling to live a healthy life style, is all the things competing for our time. Our job [...]

Gratitude: An Antidote to Anxiety?

I grew up about a mile from the ocean. Not the always sunny, tropical, palm trees in my backyard type of ocean. Rather the New England, the water is always cold until August ocean. But still, I grew up near the beach. A good part of my childhood summers were spent playing in the sand, and racing with my sisters to prove who was daring enough to dunk first in the icy salt water. There’s something about growing up near the ocean that gets inside you. Even, I would say, becomes a part of you. And yet, growing up, I [...]

Love Learn Lead September 6, 2018

How do we step back to take a good look at our lives, when life doesn’t seem to stop? When there’s always so much to do? And when it feels as if there’s never enough time? On Monday, I compared our lives to the peaches Tony and I picked last month. If I didn’t watch them closely—didn’t refrigerate or freeze them in time—they’d spoil. All of us have relationships, commitments, or aspects of our job that if we don’t inspect every now and then, could go sour. Or worse, go away completely. For example, how many of us put off [...]

Step Back September

About a month ago, Tony and I went peach picking. We drove to a local farm, and bought a box big enough to fit a whole half a bushel of peaches. Then, we trudged through the wet and muddy orchard to where they were picking that day.  It had rained hard the night before. Every time we’d reach up and pick a peach, all the trees’ leaves would shower water down our arms and onto our heads. But we weren’t deterred, and we came away with close to seventy beautiful peaches.  What did we do with all of them, you [...]

Love Learn Lead August 23, 2018

Happy Thursday, friends! August is flying by, and it has already been two weeks since introducing my new Coaching Business to the world. On Monday, we celebrated my 200th post on the blog, by talking about the importance of routine in reaching our goals and making our dreams reality.  Today, for our Love, Learn, Lead post, I am sharing a podcast episode I loved, to help inspire you to be courageous. I am talking about something important I’ve learned about habits and routines. And finally, I am leaving you with a leadership quote that I find challenging, but so worth [...]

Post 200

Before experiencing the insecurities and doubts that seem to plague us as teens, I wanted to be a writer. At nine-years-old, my nose was always in a book reading and I thought, someday I want to write books. But as things do, this dream got pushed to the back burner. Saved for later. Paired with the little voice that asked “do I really have what it takes? Would I be any good?” Not surprisingly, years passed. I experienced a call to ministry and found myself working at a church in my early twenties. But I still loved books, and I [...]

Love: Silence

Recently, on one of those rare cool mornings of summer, I went for a run. Earbuds in, I headed out of our apartment complex, and down the sidewalk of the main road. The sun wasn’t at full strength yet, and I noticed I could breath easier than I could the night before. The humidity had broken. When I got to the end of the sidewalk, I crossed the street and entered a nearby neighborhood. I was listening to a podcast, as I usually do when I run. But on this particular morning, I wasn’t feeling the episode I’d put on. [...]

Learn: Three Ways I Save Time

It’s not enough to be busy, so are the ants. The question is, what are we busy about? —Henry David Thoreau Though I haven’t read much of Thoreau’s work, I have to admit: lately, his words are speaking to me. The man who went off into the woods to live intentionally, I feel, has a lot to say to us in 2018. Not that we should all become hermits living in nature, but rather there is something powerful about stepping out of the current of our culture. To put down our phones, and figure out the best path for us [...]

Why We Have Time

“Hey, how have you been?” My friend who I hadn’t seen in weeks, asked me. I popped up from behind the counter in the youth area of the church where I worked, to see her smiling face. “Good, just really busy.” I answered quickly. It was a Sunday. I was coming off of leading the second Jr. High service of the day, and was gearing up for a meeting with students. My friend was passing through the youth area on her way to her car after service. “How are you?” I asked, hoping she knew I really wanted to know, [...]
