Love Learn Lead November 21, 2019

Friends, it is hard to believe we are closing in on Thanksgiving already. A week from today, we will be with friends and family, eating turkey and pie. Then, a week from tomorrow, the countdown to Christmas will begin. For many of us, I know, our schedules have already begun to pick up before the Holidays.  With all the busyness, in some ways, I felt a little crazy to talk about self care on the blog this month. But if you have stayed with me on this journey, I hope you have felt valued and maybe even, you’re taking me [...]

Three Lies We Believe About Exercise

At the beginning of this summer, Tony pulled out our bikes. He dusted them off, pumped up the tires, and loaded them on the back of our car. Then, for a few weekends in a row, we hit some of our local trails. It had been a few years since we had been biking, and I’d forgotten how much fun it can be.  Each ride, we went for a longer distance than we had before. We found a trail nearby that is mostly paved and shaded, which became our favorite. Tony and I were having a great time and I [...]

Love Learn Lead August 8, 2019

In my previous life, ok about eight years ago, I was a youth pastor. For part of my job, a couple of times a year, I would take a group of teens on trips. Sometimes they were mission trips to other countries, during the winters it was weekend retreats, and for a few summers we used to take over a hundred teenagers on a four day camping trip to a music festival. You read that right, over a hundred students. I am sure there are ministries who have much bigger groups than we did, but it was quite an undertaking. [...]

Back to Basics (Before the Fall)

Two weeks ago, I ran into Target to pick up a few things. I worked my way through the personal care and grocery sections. Then, as I came around a corner, there it was: the back to school section.  It was only the middle of July, and Target was telling me to get ready for fall. Now, I could go on and on about how stores are always trying to push us into the next season. Putting Christmas candy out the day after Halloween, putting Easter Candy out the day after Valentine’s Day, etc. But when they put up these [...]

Does Your Marriage Need a Chore Chart?

You know you had one. Whether it was in your head or your diary, posted on your mirror or hidden deep in your heart—when you were single, you had a list. Though it maybe embarrassing to admit now, because as least at one point it described a movie star more than anyone you knew in real life, you had one.  You had a list of what you were looking for in a spouse.  Tall or short, athletic or nerdy, you had some sort of picture in your head of who you wanted to marry. Maybe even down to what color [...]

Five Ways I Manage Anxiety

In celebration of her fortieth birthday, last month author Sarah Bessey shared forty important things she’s learned in her life. One thing she said that struck me was this: “Being a responsible adult is the most underrated form of self-care.” Then she went on to explain by listing all the “boring” tasks of adulting like going to bed at a decent time, exercising, keeping a budget, etc.  Sometimes, the greatest thing we can do for ourselves is to live a more disciplined and routine life. To commit to practices that don’t necessarily bring us the most joy, but in the big [...]

5 Things I Loved in March

March is coming to a close, and I have been looking forward to the end of this month for weeks. One obvious reason is spring is here, and hopefully, the weather will start to act accordingly. But mostly, I’ve been looking forward to getting away.  This weekend, Tony and I are headed to the Finger Lakes in New York with our best friends. We’re going to eat good food, take a hike (weather permitting), and visit some of our favorite wineries. And of course, the best part will be, being all together. Friendship is such a gift.  Doing life together [...]

I’m Hearing Voices, How About You?

“When I was your age, I had to walk to school through the snow, barefoot. And it was uphill both ways.”  How many of us heard those words, or something similar, growing up? In other words, life is hard, so suck it up.  Perhaps that is why, when I was twenty-two, I was walking through the snow with bronchial pneumonia, to get to a bus that would take me to work. I just thought that’s what adults do. We ignore our ailments and suppress our pain. We “suck it up,” and do what is expected of us. Only now, I [...]

Love: Great Podcasts to Start the New Year

Do you ever feel like there isn’t enough time in the day to read all the books you want to read? Or to learn all the things you want to learn? I feel that way more times than I can count. That is why I love podcasts. Podcasts can give you twenty to sixty minutes of good information right in your ears as you drive to the grocery store, fold laundry, or workout in the gym. Sometimes, the people being interviewed are the authors of the books we want to read. And we can learn some great stuff even if [...]

My Brain Is Wired For Coffee

If you’ve learned anything about me by now, there’s a good chance, it’s that I like coffee. Ok, truthfully? It’s that I LOVE coffee. Drinking a good cup filled with that steaming black liquid, is one of my favorite parts of almost every day.  Only, around November, I started drinking more than just coffee. Before you get any bad ideas, let me tell you I started making mocha’s at home. Into the bottom of my mug, I’d toss a tablespoon of cocoa powder. Then, I’d add a little more than a tablespoon of maple syrup (the real stuff). I’d stir [...]
