Love: Christmas Gifts Ideas With a Story

In my most idillic thoughts, Christmas shopping looks like holding a Holiday inspired latte in one hand and bags of already purchased gifts in the other. It looks like walking down a small town street lined with adorable little shops filled with local or fair-trade goods. And of course, in this beautiful dream, snow fills the air. Oh what Hallmark has done to us all.  In reality, for me and Tony, Christmas shopping often looks like a combination of long days shopping for our nieces and nephews, combined with hours scouring online for the right, age-appropriate gifts. And, as we [...]

Love: My Favorite Books From 2019

“Some books leave us free and some books make us free.”  —Ralph Waldo Emerson Do you ever wish there was more time in a day just to read?  I know I do. There always seems to be more work, laundry, or something to clean calling my name as soon as I sit down with a good book. It feels like all of life’s responsibilities call to me the loudest when I get quiet. While, if I get sucked into endlessly scrolling social media on my phone, everything else is strangely silent. How I wish it was the other way around.  [...]

Love Learn Lead November 21, 2019

Friends, it is hard to believe we are closing in on Thanksgiving already. A week from today, we will be with friends and family, eating turkey and pie. Then, a week from tomorrow, the countdown to Christmas will begin. For many of us, I know, our schedules have already begun to pick up before the Holidays.  With all the busyness, in some ways, I felt a little crazy to talk about self care on the blog this month. But if you have stayed with me on this journey, I hope you have felt valued and maybe even, you’re taking me [...]

How to Choose Self Care Over Self Comfort

A number of years ago, I sat in a coffee shop with a person I was mentoring. And as I often do, I asked her what it looked like to take care of herself in the busy season she was currently living. Her response was something like: “I think I need to practice self care more. I need to make time to get weekly massages and sit in the hot tub.”  Right away, as I tried to wipe a look of surprise from my face, I had two thoughts: One, she may have had self care figured out way more [...]

When It’s Actually Ok to Compare

In our kitchen, on the shelf just above our toaster, you will find a small bronze colored tool that looks like a wrench. It came with a piece of Ikea furniture we bought years ago. And somehow, it got repurposed for pulling things out of our toaster oven.  Once our food is cooked, the hot oven rack is too small to grab with a mitt, so we reach in there and hook it with this “wrench.” Then, we drag it out. Only, it doesn’t work that well. In fact sometimes, I still burn myself. Yet here we are, years later, [...]

How to Focus on Your Lane & Avoid Comparison

Every now and then, I meet someone who’s never struggled with comparison or insecurity. Or at least, they’re very good at pretending. There have been times where I’ve admitted to such a person that I’ve struggled with an insecurity or wanting to be like someone else, either in my present or my past, and only received a blank look. Other times, I’ve received a confused expression like  “Why would you worry about that?”  My response is usually to drop it like I haven’t made any confession at all, and move on. When inside I am always thinking, “I don’t know [...]

How to Choose Curiosity Over Comparison

I’m a big believer in paying attention. Not just to stop lights or people talking to me, but also to myself. In my twenties, I learned the hard way that to live a healthy life, it’s crucial to pay attention to both our bodies and our emotions.  But our emotions are tricky things. Wrapped up with our thoughts, they can direct us toward beautiful and wonderful endeavors. Or, if our thoughts aren’t good, they can send us spiraling for hours or days down a destructive path. In other words, to take care of our emotions, we need to guard our [...]

Love Learn Lead October 10, 2019

When I was a kid, I was homeschooled until sixth grade. This meant, that while my classmates had figured out the social structure of public school all the way back in Kindergarten, I was just beginning. Seeking to survive middle school, I couldn’t help but compare myself to the “cool kids,” to those who my teacher had deemed the “smart kids,” and who socially, had been designated to their own lonely corner of the lunch table.  Looking back, I don’t know that I ever fully found my place. Only, even at the age of twelve, comparison led me to judge [...]

Love: Books That Have Changed My Life

If you are reader, chances are there have been a few books that you didn’t want to put down. Books, you didn’t want to end. And perhaps even, books that changed your life. As we’ve been talking about change this month on the blog, I couldn’t help but think of all the many things in life that change us. Relationships, jobs, trauma and surprisingly good opportunities—all have the power to alter not only our life’s path, but also who we are in our very being. The interesting thing though, is so can art. A good song can reframe an experience [...]

Five Things I Wish Someone Told Me About Moving Far From Home

Years ago, I talked to an expat who had lived overseas for over thirty years. He said that after being away from your country of origin for ten years, your sense of where you come from shifts. Your idea of home gets muddled. Because all your recent history has been spent in a place other than where you grew up, you begin to feel like you belong where you are, more than where you’re from.  Living in a different culture for so many years, I am sure, enhanced his experience even more so. But now, after living fifteen years in [...]
