Learn: Anything Can Happen in 2019

Eight years ago this month, a school bus hit the back of my car. Now, before you start picturing a school bus full of screaming kids, a distraught bus driver, and me on the side of the road with a wrecked car—let me tell you, it wasn’t like that. But, my car was wrecked. That morning, on a sunny day in the middle of January, I went to work as I always did. I parked my car in the spot I always parked. Then I walked into work thinking about the meetings I had that day.  About an hour later, [...]

All That Didn’t Happen in 2018

Last January, Tony and I took a ride down to Baltimore early on a Saturday morning. We found parking, then walked to the Barnes and Noble at Inner Harbor. There, we ordered hot beverages and set up shop in the cafe. Armed with the pdf of a Dream Guide I found online, we began plotting what we wanted 2018 to look like.  Other than a break for lunch and a quick walk in the sunshine, we were there all day. We reflected on 2017, going over what routines or goals worked and what didn’t. We named and even redefined [...]

Learn: 3 Easy Ways to Make 2019 Great

One of my biggest struggles around this time of year, is with New Year’s Resolutions. Though they are a part of a tradition cultures have held for thousands of years, it is easy to feel skeptical about them. After all, according to this article, eighty percent of New Year’s Resolutions fail by February. Making at least half of us wonder, “What is the point?” Now, that is not to say I don’t believe in making changes around the time of the New Year—I just believe that making resolutions don’t help our success rate. Change, I believe in. A resolution to [...]

Things I Learned in 2018

We did it.  We’ve made it through 2018. For some of us, it was one of the best years of our lives. For others of us it was the worst. And for most of us, our year falls somewhere in the middle. But for me, the beauty of even the hardest years is being able to stand on this day—the last day of the year—and see the good.  Every December 31st, I take a few minutes to catalogue the year, even if only roughly in my journal. I list all of the big moments; the trips, milestones, events, etc. I [...]

Things I Loved 2018

When you think back on 2018, what will you remember?  What life events will come to mind? What world events? Or, perhaps more fun, what show will you remember binging? What songs will bring you right back to where you were in life, this past year? Today, I want to share with you my list of things I loved in 2018. They are shows or some form of media. They are things that bring me small joys. And others are memories I hope to always hold close. I hope this list helps you get to know me a little better, [...]

Merry Christmas Eve

“Rejected at the inn, holy God comes in small to where you feel rejected and small. God is with you now. Wherever you are—in a soundless cry or hidden brokenness or in your ache—God always wants to be with you. You are not ever left alone in this. We are never left alone in this; God is with us.” —Ann Voskamp, The Greatest Gift The message of Christmas is that we are never alone. We never have to be alone. Jesus was born into a humble manger to make sure of it. Whether you are surrounded by loved ones, a [...]

Love Learn Lead December 20, 2018

Five more days.  I won’t even ask if you are ready. Especially because, deep in my heart, I believe Christmas isn’t about having all your gift shopping done, presents wrapped, or even, plans set. For a holiday that celebrates an unplanned birth in a manger, perfection isn’t the point. What I’ll ask instead is: Are you enjoying this Christmas Season? Has it felt merry and bright? Has it already given you a new memory or two of being with people you love? Has it reminded you of all you have to be thankful for?—Or that you are loved far more [...]

Christmas lights

When I was a kid, after Thanksgiving, I would always beg my parents to set up our Christmas Tree as soon as possible. This meant going out and searching around a cold lot with my dad and older sister to pick out the best looking tree. We’d bring it home, Dad would put it in the stand, then we’d hold the light cords as he carefully spiraled them around the tree.  One year, after stringing the lights, my dad got up on a ladder to put the tree topper on. Only, there were too many branches at the top, so [...]

Leadership Tip #21: Lead By Example This tip, is one we were most likely first taught by our parents. After all how many of us were told by our parents to be a good example for our younger brothers or sisters? And what better time to talk about something we were taught as kids, then around the time of year when we were also told to be good for Santa? Like being good for Santa, being a good example may be one of the things our parents taught us that we’ve discarded. Or at least, begun to take for granted. [...]

Buying Gifts For Each Other At Christmas

Ever notice how sometimes the hardest person to buy a Christmas gift for isn’t your great aunt on your mother’s side?  Instead, it’s your significant other? They’re the person you spend the most time with, and who you know better than anyone else. Yet some years it feels like solving world hunger would be easier than finding them the perfect gift.  Only, I don’t believe, as couples, that the gift is always our main problem.Yes, there is typically the stress over what to get each other. But our initial struggle of gift giving usually begins when we don’t talk or [...]
