What You Can Do

Confession: There are days life overwhelms me. If I were to take this confession a litter further, I would also admit I have more overwhelming days than I’d like. I have mornings where I feel the weight of writing something that will matter. Days when our world’s brokenness feels beyond repair. Afternoons where the changes I’ve been praying for and working toward, feel like they will never happen. And nights where I just feel too tired to do it all again tomorrow. Life is hard. At times it feels a little too impossible. And I’m sensing, you can relate. Because, [...]

Love Learn Lead April 5, 2018

It seems almost unfair that the grey skies of winter often give way to the rainy days of spring, before the sun finally warms our days more consistently. Conversely, last week, I saw a friend who lives in the desert out west. She told me that other than a few weeks a year, every day is sunny where she lives. And I wondered, would I miss the rain, if I lived in the desert? Important things happen in the rainy, in between months. Here in the Northeast, it is when the first plants of the season begin to take root. [...]

Lead: How to Make 2018 Awesome

Early in the morning, on New Year’s Day, Tony and I woke to the sound of the alarm going off on my phone. Through squinting eyes, I looked at its screen, so badly wanting to hit snooze. Only I couldn’t; we had a flight to catch. I clicked, “Stop,” then laid in bed staring at the ceiling. “It’s 2018,” I thought. A minute later, I rolled over and nudged Tony to make sure he was awake. Then we got up to face our long day of travel home. We braved the negative six degree weather, and made our way to [...]

Easier Said, Than Done

“Just give it a try.” “Put yourself out there.” “You know what you should do…” We’ve all been there. When we’re the ones that need something to change. When we’re on the side of a conversation where we’re getting the advice, and those on the other side are saying things we don’t want to hear. Not because what they have to say is wrong, but because it’s hard. They keep talking until we finally say: “It’s easier said, than done.” And like that—unless our friends or family are relentless—the conversation is over. We start talking about the football game or [...]

In Search of the Perfect Picture

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” —John Lennon More than any other social media, Instagram is to blame for any amount of time I waste in my life. Ok, any wasted time is my fault—but Instagram is usually the cause. Photo’s of my friend’s adventures or Insta-stories of people living in cool places (check out @GirlinFlorence if you want a fabulous taste of Italy)—all of it, sucks me in. Almost daily I find myself mindlessly scrolling through photo’s I have already seen, and I have to tell myself to put the phone down. Beautiful [...]

Learn: How I got Unstuck

To best appreciate this post, read this first. The hot July sun tried to pierce through the trees, as we made our way down the trail, only the tree cover was thick enough to keep us cool. My sister and brother-in-law were visiting us from Massachusetts, and we were showing them one of our favorite places, Ricketts Glen State Park. At this point, we had hiked the trails that pass by the majority of the waterfalls in the park, but we wanted to make a stop at Adams Falls as well. We walked down the path to the bottom, where [...]

Love Learn Lead October 5, 2017

Ever feel like some seasons sneak up on you? Like one day you are worrying about sunscreen and the next, you’re trudging through a field looking for the best looking pumpkin. Or, we just begin to enjoy fall, and all the stores start bringing out their Christmas line. I have to admit, that’s how I am feeling this fall. Part of it has to do with going on vacation right at the beginning of September. While my friends were putting their kids back on the school bus, we were still very much in summer mode. But then the day we [...]

Post 100

This post is my one-hundredth post on MelissaSchlies.com. 100 feels like a very big number. Yet, I haven’t even been blogging a year yet. Some bloggers post more often than I do and pass this mark a lot sooner. Other bloggers have been in the game for while. A few have even surpassed the decade mark. Their followers are in the five and six digits, where mine are still hard to calculate. As a newish blogger, it doesn’t take a lot to feel small. When you think about it, there are probably millions of bloggers world wide. This means that [...]

Don’t Worry, That’s Normal

Have you ever watched a professional make pizza? They start by tossing a smooth ball of dough in the air. Then with the back of their hands, they slowly and rhythmically stretch it out into an almost perfectly round pizza crust. They make it look so easy. For some reason, when I began making bread from scratch, that pizza dough is what I envisioned, yet it did not become my reality. Early on, my goal in baking bread was to make something healthy we could use for sandwiches. So Tony surprised me with a cookbook that would teach me how [...]

Say Yes (to adventure)

Our canoe made a soft scraping sound against the sand as we arrived on the shore of our next portage. Quickly, we jumped out and lifted the canoe slightly, to drag it further onto shore. We attached our paddles to the inside, and then began to unload. Tony helped me lift my first pack onto my back. His brother, Mike, and our sister-in-law, Wendy, had arrived a few minutes before us. We could see Wendy was already loaded up, and heading down the trail. I grabbed a bucket and a folding table, and followed her. We were in the Boundary [...]
