Love Learn Lead July 5, 2018

Happy Thursday, friends! Hope you are coming off a wonderful July 4th, spent with family and friends, with good food and good weather. Tony and I are in Wisconsin right now, and had the rare treat of flying in just in time for a big family picnic. Now, we’re going to spend as much time as we can with our nieces and nephews. As we’re sure, they’ll all grow at least a foot by the time we see them again, at Christmas. This month on the blog, we are going to be talking about some “Why’s.” On Monday, we looked [...]

Lead May 31, 2018

This month, I want us to look at some very important aspects of leadership—including why leaders fail. But I also want to try and equip you with some lessons I have learned over the years, about being a leader. For this reason, every Thursday this month, I will share one of my leadership tips. If you are just beginning your leadership journey, it is my hope that these will give you some practical help in fully embracing your current role. Or, if you’ve been leading for a while that they will assist you as you begin empowering others to lead. [...]

When Leaders Rest

“Right now, we take better care of our smart phones than we do of ourselves. Like I bet everyone…right now knows how much battery remains on their smart phones—if it gets below thirteen percent we get anxious…’what would happen if it died?’…Until I collapsed, I was unaware I was at zero percent.” — Ariana Huffington, Interview with Chase Jarvis   Do you know how much “battery power” you have left? Not in your smart phone, but in you? When I first got out of college, I thought that to succeed, I had to be “on” at all times. No matter what [...]

When Leaders Fall

A cause that is excruciatingly dear to my heart, is churches ordaining women pastors. As slow as equal rights for women have moved in the workplace, in the church they have moved even slower. Toxic rhetoric around the role of women, is recited often as clearly as scripture in many church leadership circles. And when I left church ministry for related reasons, I quickly started looking for churches that empower women.  In the denomination I had served in, I found few. However one of those churches was a rather large one, lead by a world renown, influential leader. I started [...]

When Leaders Stand

“The mark of a true leader is when you get to a scary place, you stand. Instead of turning and running, you stand.” —Lisa Harper One of my favorite somewhat older movies, is About a Boy, with Hugh Grant. In it, Grant plays a self-absorbed bachelor, Will, who becomes a reluctant mentor to an awkward yet endearing teenage boy, named Marcus. If you’ve watched it, you know there is this unforgettable scene toward the end of the movie, where Will tries to save Marcus from the ultimate embarrassment—singing horribly in front of his entire school. Hoping to cheer up his [...]

When Leader’s Run

When I was in high school, every one of my classmates were made to run a mile in gym—including me. I, who had terrible asthma, could barely run a lap around the football field, and even had a doctors note—still had to get out there and try.  During this time, I used to wonder why we all had to run. It was obvious some of us were athletes and others of us were definitely not (hello, doctor’s note!). Wouldn’t it make more sense for some of us to run, some of us to walk, and still others of us, to [...]
