Happy Thanksgiving

To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven. —Johannes A. Gaertner   May our celebrations with friends and family today, be our way of living out our gratitude. As we give thanks, may our joy overflow into the coming season. And as we enter into a greater awareness of all we have been given, may we touch heaven.   Grateful for you. Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving, Friends!     Do you feel mentally and/or emotionally overloaded by both real life and the approaching Holidays? If [...]

Rewiring Our Body Image: #MyBodyHas

Do you remember the first time you had a negative thought about your body? I know I don’t. All I know is I was young, and that since then, there have been too many to count. Sometimes, thoughts of shame about my body have come as easily to me as breathing. They fly through my brain and land in my heart bringing a heaviness that is hard to shake. Because they’ve been making their appearance for years now, they leave in their wake a sense of defeat.  They tell me my body will never be enough. My body that has [...]

Learn: That Weird Place In The Middle

It may surprise you to learn, I was unhappy to find myself working at a university bookstore after graduating college. As you might know, I love books. I was an English major. And, one of my favorite things to do is to wander the aisles of a bookstore with a cup of coffee in my hand. For me it’s pretty close to heaven. So why wasn’t I happy? Well, for one, shelving text books isn’t the same as reading a fantastic novel. Retail is hard work. But more than anything, my unhappiness wasn’t about where I was, it was about [...]

Being a Grown-Up

Perhaps I watched too many Disney movies as a kid, but I used to believe that if I did all the right things, my life wouldn’t be hard. As if pain only comes to those who get into trouble. As if struggle is a choice. But then, I found myself pursuing a career with little room for women. I found a lump and thought I might have cancer at twenty-three. When I finally got a job in my career field, I moved to another state and learned that beginning a new life in a new town isn’t so easy. And [...]

Happy Thanksgiving 2018

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”  ―Melody Beattie Wishing you a very happy day, friends. May the spirit of this day turn what you have into enough. May you know feasting, belonging, and friendship, today and always.  Oh, and wherever you are, may there be pie, lots of pie.  What or who are you thankful for today?     Are you in [...]

Gratitude: An Antidote to Anxiety?

I grew up about a mile from the ocean. Not the always sunny, tropical, palm trees in my backyard type of ocean. Rather the New England, the water is always cold until August ocean. But still, I grew up near the beach. A good part of my childhood summers were spent playing in the sand, and racing with my sisters to prove who was daring enough to dunk first in the icy salt water. There’s something about growing up near the ocean that gets inside you. Even, I would say, becomes a part of you. And yet, growing up, I [...]

When Summer Ends

When you get married, people give you all kinds of advice. I’ve heard the same is true if you have a baby, but I wouldn’t know. I do know however that so much of the advice we received leading up to our wedding day felt like clothes we couldn’t fit into yet. Everything about our relationship was new and shiny, it was hard to imagine experiencing the scuffs and bruises that life inevitably brings. So much of what people said seemed to roll off the glow of our excitement.  Though there was one piece of advice, that still to this [...]
