Why We Train

There is something about climbing a mountain that makes you feel as if you can conquer the world. It could be the sense of accomplishment you get when you realize you’ve reached the peak, or perhaps it’s the view. Whatever it is, it’s a good feeling. The surprising part of this experience however, is that the mountain we climb doesn’t always have to be big for us to feel it. It doesn’t always require poles or even camping gear. We don’t have to hike Everest. It is not about scaling the highest mountain, as much as it is about [...]

Love Learn Lead July 5, 2018

Happy Thursday, friends! Hope you are coming off a wonderful July 4th, spent with family and friends, with good food and good weather. Tony and I are in Wisconsin right now, and had the rare treat of flying in just in time for a big family picnic. Now, we’re going to spend as much time as we can with our nieces and nephews. As we’re sure, they’ll all grow at least a foot by the time we see them again, at Christmas. This month on the blog, we are going to be talking about some “Why’s.” On Monday, we looked [...]

Why We Try

One of the most memorable characters I have ever met through reading, is Mrs. Havisham. From Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, which I (mostly)read for a class in college, Havisham isn’t actually a “Mrs.” at all. Yet, she is unforgettable. Left at the altar decades before we meet her in the book, Havisham is still wearing her wedding dress. Having commanded all of her servants to leave everything in her house the same as it was on her wedding day, her beyond rotten wedding cake still sits on the table. She is living in the decay of her dream. When her [...]

When Leaders Stand

“The mark of a true leader is when you get to a scary place, you stand. Instead of turning and running, you stand.” —Lisa Harper One of my favorite somewhat older movies, is About a Boy, with Hugh Grant. In it, Grant plays a self-absorbed bachelor, Will, who becomes a reluctant mentor to an awkward yet endearing teenage boy, named Marcus. If you’ve watched it, you know there is this unforgettable scene toward the end of the movie, where Will tries to save Marcus from the ultimate embarrassment—singing horribly in front of his entire school. Hoping to cheer up his [...]

When Leader’s Run

When I was in high school, every one of my classmates were made to run a mile in gym—including me. I, who had terrible asthma, could barely run a lap around the football field, and even had a doctors note—still had to get out there and try.  During this time, I used to wonder why we all had to run. It was obvious some of us were athletes and others of us were definitely not (hello, doctor’s note!). Wouldn’t it make more sense for some of us to run, some of us to walk, and still others of us, to [...]

Second Hand Brave

“Wouldn’t it be cool if…” We’ve all thought. Sometimes, we’ve even said it out loud. Only often, we’ve followed our BIG, wonderful words with “But…” Then a slew of reasons for why our epiphany, idea, or dream just couldn’t possibly work, fill our mind. Or, they pour out of the mouths of those around us. It’s always easier to doubt. Count the cost, measure the risk, and feel we’re coming up short. Only lately, I have been wondering about all the promising ideas we’ve let go by the wayside. Because we didn’t believe in them enough. They seemed like too [...]

Learning, It’s Up To You

You know those times when someone older and wiser, gets up on their soap box, then begins their latest diatribe with the words: “There are two kinds of people in this world…” It’s always bothered me. Mostly because I find humanity to be extremely eclectic and varied. But also because to break up people into two camps seems very narrow-minded. Only, today—that is what I am going to do. Not because I think there really are only two kinds of people, but rather because in life, there are choices all of us have where there are only two options. An [...]

What You Can Do

Confession: There are days life overwhelms me. If I were to take this confession a litter further, I would also admit I have more overwhelming days than I’d like. I have mornings where I feel the weight of writing something that will matter. Days when our world’s brokenness feels beyond repair. Afternoons where the changes I’ve been praying for and working toward, feel like they will never happen. And nights where I just feel too tired to do it all again tomorrow. Life is hard. At times it feels a little too impossible. And I’m sensing, you can relate. Because, [...]

Love On April Fools

B&B hosts tell the best stories. If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, or if you follow my Instagram, you know I love to travel. For me and Tony, it’s probably our favorite thing to do together. Early in our marriage, we discovered we really enjoy staying at Bed and Breakfasts. AirB&B or traditional B&B’s, we are in. And on our travels, we’ve had some incredible hosts. One of our favorite’s, we’ll call her “V,” we met in Northern Ireland. We stayed in her charming B&B for a few days, while checking out Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle, and [...]

When Our Story Is Too Small

When I was a kid, I was always telling stories. I had a BIG imagination. With my friends or sisters, we’d create these elaborate, imaginary places for us to live. Then we’d create some sort of conflict or drama to work through together. Whether imagining life on a ranch (I loved horses), or as singing and dancing pop stars, we were never bored. Oh, what childhood looked like before technology. But the interested thing about our imagination, is that it doesn’t leave us when we become adults. We just seem to use it for different things. Sadly, it’s often the [...]
