What if They Don’t Like Me?

I grabbed my bag, quickly looking inside to make sure I had something to write with. I found a pen and a pencil. Then, taking a deep breath, I zipped up my bag, and hung the strap over my shoulder. I check the time, I was ten minutes early. Just enough to get coffee. I locked the car, then looking both ways, crossed the parking lot. I entered the store. Though it was quiet for a Saturday, there was a small line at the cafe. I stepped in behind a man with two small girls. One was telling him she [...]

Leadership Tip #23: Learn How to Get Back Up

I was an honor student in high school. Maybe you’ve figured that out by now. Not because I am amazing, but perhaps because I am amazingly detailed. Or at least, I try as hard as I can to be.  As a kid who grew up in a good home that faced its fair share of crisis, details became very important to me. The more details I was able to keep track of, at home and at school, the more I could keep things from falling apart. Even better, the greater chance I could succeed.  The thing about being an honor [...]

What if I Make the Wrong Choice?

This wasn’t supposed to be my story.  These words found their way into my thoughts as I pulled towels out of the dryer and began folding them. A year and half into being married, at thirty years of age, I was home without a job. Each day, my most pressing responsibilities were doing laundry and making dinner. I was a stay at home wife. I never thought I’d be a stay at home wife. Even if we decided to have kids, I always pictured myself as the working mom. But now, I was what I had judged other women so [...]

Love Learn Lead July 11, 2019

Recently I was listening to a podcast where the guy being interviewed shared a story of a conversation he had with his wife. Their neighborhood was changing significantly from how it was when they moved there. And they were worried about their children not living close enough to nature. So casually, his wife asked,  “Do you think we should move?” Within seconds, in his mind, this man went from selling his house, to selling his car because his commute would change, to getting a tractor to mow the lawn of the new farm they would buy. Some of us have [...]

What if I don’t get it?

When I was in high school, I had a friend who applied to Harvard. Then she begged me not to tell anyone that she applied. It was a big, audacious dream that was too fragile to share. Best case scenario, if she got in, it would be this wonderful surprise for her to announce. But if she didn’t, she wouldn’t have to face the public embarrassment of not being accepted.  When it comes to pursuing a goal, “What if I don’t get it?” is one of the scariest questions we can ask. Whether we’re applying to a college or to our [...]

Thankful, On The Fourth of July

Here in the US, many of us today will wake up looking forward to a cookout with friends or family. We’ll be thinking about the food we’re going to bring, or who will be at the party. There will be hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, and maybe even our Aunt’s famous Jello cake, all in Red, White, and Blue. And in the evening, we’ll sit on a blanket in the grass somewhere, or in front of our TV at home, to watch fireworks. After all, it’s July 4th. A day that marks our country’s declaration of freedom should be celebrated this [...]

What If

They are the questions we share with our closest people, and sometimes, only utter to ourselves. They are the ones that wake us up at night, and keep us stalled at the intersections of our lives. And they begin with these two little words: “What if…” What if I apply for this job, and I don’t get it? What if I do get the job and I hate it? What if they think my idea is stupid? What if I move, but I can’t find a job? What if no one likes me? What if my friends or family disowns [...]

Five Great Ways To Connect With Friends

A few years ago, I remember going to the movies with a new friend. We had both realized we were reading the same book in hopes of finishing it in time to see the movie when it came out in theaters. So, we decided to go see the movie together.  The week it came out, we got to the theater really early. As the two of us sat in our seats, in the dark, waiting for the previews to start, all of a sudden, I felt nervous. What are we going to talk about? I began to wonder. Then I [...]

This Summer, Have People Over

“What people are craving isn’t perfection. People aren’t longing to be impressed; they’re longing to feel like they’re home.” —Shauna Niequist, Bread & Wine Have you ever wondered what it is about your favorite TV shows that you like so much? For me, I’ve noticed that in almost all of mine, there is a close friend group. But more than that, they all do this one thing: They eat together. One of the most recent examples I can think of is The Big Bang Theory. Though Leonard and Sheldon didn’t have a dinning room table, in close to every episode, [...]

Team Schlies Travel Guide (Repost)

As travel is one of our favorite things, and these tips still serve us well, today I am reposting our Travel Guide. Enjoy! For the born traveller, travelling is a besetting vice. Like other vices, it is imperious, demanding its victim's time, money, energy and the sacrifice of comfort. —Aldous Huxley For those of us who love to travel, Huxley’s words seem both dramatic, and somewhat true. Leaving one’s home to explore the world, can take our time, money, energy, and even, our comfort. But, if you’ve been bitten by the wanderlust bug, like we have—for the most part, you’re [...]
