Happy Thursday! —I have to warn you, if you get squeamish, you might want to skip the story I am about to tell, and go straight to “Love.”  But last Thursday, I was working on a project and sliced off a small piece of my finger. Thankfully, it was early in the morning so my husband was still around and could help me bandage it up (stitches were not an option). But the whole ordeal was rather upsetting.

It was so bad, I FaceTimed my sister who is a nurse and asked her what to do because the bleeding was so constant. Her answer: hold pressure on it for a couple of hours. Not really what I wanted to hear when I had so much to do that day!

But, sometimes our plans are not in the cards, so we have to figure out what is most important and let go of the rest. If your day or week hasn’t gone so well, I pray that you are able to let go of what you can and see the good in what is!

Without going into any details, the past six months have been rather rocky for my family. Every now and then, when I am going through a hard time, a song comes along that speaks to exactly where I am at. Lately, for me, that song has been Ellie Holcomb’s Find You Here.” The first track on her new album, Red Sea Road, this song speaks to all the ways God meets us in hard times. It is so beautiful and encouraging. I have been listening to it at least once a day for the past two weeks!

Sometimes, our “to do” lists seem endless. There is so much for us to do that we get overwhelmed. We don’t know where to begin, so we don’t. We do only what is screaming at us to get done, or what we need to do (like go grocery shopping, go to work, etc.), as the rest of our lives’ concerns pile up. So what do we do?

Lately, for me, I have been learning that the secret is not clearing an entire day of my schedule to catch up on my to do list. If I do this, I may just feel so overwhelmed and binge watch a TV show instead. Rather, I am finding the secret is to commit to doing at least one thing on the list, a couple of times a week.

If I have a busy day, but have a few minutes at lunch, I look down the list to something that might take me five minutes (like calling the dentist to schedule an appointment). If I have a free afternoon at home, I look for something that will take more time (like cleaning the bathroom or catching up on laundry). The more I focus on just one task at a time, the less overwhelmed I feel  with the big picture. And, as I complete each task, there is a sense of accomplishment and that I am moving in the right direction.
