Recently, I heard two writers talk about the days of the week as if they were personalities. They said Mondays’ were the “downer” days, Tuesdays’ were the real life, “get to work” days, and Fridays’ were the party days. But Thursdays are the in between days. The weekend is so close, and yet there is still one more day of work.

With these thoughts about Thursdays in mind, you may have noticed here on the blog, we have a recurring post that is both a mix of fun and a little bit of serious. Thursday is “L” day. Every week, I will share something that falls in one, two, or three of the following “L” word categories: Love, Learn, and Lead. Here is todays. Enjoy!

Love

For the past few days I can tell you what I haven’t been loving: my sore throat and feeling exhausted all the time! I have been fighting a cold of some kind. But is there anything better when you are sick, than a cup of tea?

The tea I am loving and drinking these days is Celestial Seasonings Safari Spice Rooibos. I discovered Rooibos after going off decaf and trying to limit my coffee intake. It’s a red tea and it is full bodied, so you feel like you are drinking more than just flavored water. It is delicious.

What do you eat or drink when you are sick?

Learn

Over and over in my life I am reminded that to do anything of value, and to be a person who makes a mark, you can never, ever stop learning. Unfortunately/fortunately though, some lessons are more interesting than others. This past summer, my husband and I were invited to go on a nostalgic, reunion canoe trip with his old Boy Scout leaders, his brother and our sister-in-law. So, we paddled our way into the wilderness of northern Minnesota for seven days of camping, exploring, fishing—and no modern marks of civilization such as running water, bathrooms, or internet.

Personally, my biggest concern was not having a shower everyday (and having a bear visit our campsite), but I soon learned that not showering is actually a small price to pay for the pure beauty and the peace of untouched creation. At the beginning of the week my focus was to just survive—but by the end I was saying I would do it again!

What stretching situations have you found yourself in, and what did you learn?

Lead

“I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.”

— Mahatma Gandhi

The soul of our nation right now feels rubbed raw. However, the issues we debate, protest, and worry over are not new. Rather the scab has been torn off, the wound is worse than we thought, and we are bleeding everywhere.

When I watch the news it seems as if everyone wants to put new, stronger laws into place, as if they are bandaids that are big enough. But I am becoming more convinced, everyday, that the healing needs to start small. It needs to start in how we treat our neighbors and the people we interact with everyday. We can’t wait for politicians to be elected to save us (as if they could), we need to become the leaders we wish they were.

What are you loving and learning?

Where are you leading?  And what have you learned about leadership?
