I know, I know—I said last week, that there’d be no more Thursday posts. But as we’re all getting ready for a tougher-than-most holiday season, I thought I’d share an updated list of all my favorite Thanksgiving Links to get us through this week!
As I have shared before, hands down, fall is my favorite season. Give me the chunky sweaters, all the flannel, the apple picking, and the pumpkin flavored (almost) anything—I am here for it. Though many people think Halloween is the best fall holiday, Thanksgiving is my favorite.
But this holiday that also typically offers an extra long weekend, time with family or friends, and really good food—is looking a bit different this year. We are all landing on Thanksgiving’s doorstep feeling a little conflicted. So, with this in mind, today I am sharing the links to some of my favorite Thanksgiving things. It is my hope these will help us make the most of what is, rather than focus on what can’t be.
First, I’m passing along some recipes—all gluten free in case you have someone with an allergy or you’re trying to limit the carbs. I am also sharing a few great podcasts for you to listen to if you’re spending time alone working in the kitchen. And finally, if football or shopping is not your thing, and you find yourself with some down time, I share a few fun, food-related cozy reads.
Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed Holiday. Enjoy!
Food:
All the ratio’s on this are perfect—except the spices. I bump up the flavor with two teaspoons cinnamon, a half of a teaspoon of ginger (or to taste), and a quarter teaspoon ground cloves.
Last week on Instagram, I shared how I make my own pumpkin puree every year with pumpkins we buy at a local farm. This link will give you Alton Brown’s recipe–which other than the salt, is very close to the way I make it. If my pumpkin is watery though, I strain it. Then I weigh it out in fifteen ounce portions (the same amount that is found in a can), and freeze the pumpkin I’m not using right away in quart size freezer bags.
This is Martha Stewart’s recipe, so you can’t go wrong. Great to make for pumpkin pie. Also, if you’re looking for some fun ways to experiment with your pie decorating, here is a fun link.
Delicious on it’s own, or great for making corn bread stuffing!
Sherried Green Beans & Mushrooms
This recipe dresses up green beans in a way that will make you want seconds.
Podcasts:
Out of the Ordinary with Lisa Jo Baker and Christie Purifoy:
So many of us are celebrating the holidays differently this year, and this conversation helps put things into perspective.
For the Love with Jen Hatmaker:
Dishing With The Pioneer Woman: Ree Drummond
Wise Men (and Women) Bring Gifts Of Boundaries At The Holidays With Dr. Henry Cloud & John Townsend
Both of these episodes from the For The Love Podcast, are so on point for the holidays. One will make you want to cook, the other will help you feel more prepared for loving your family well this holiday season.
Books:
by Shauna Niequist
Such a great book to read as you head into the busyness of Christmas. Shauna helps remind us what is most important when sharing a meal or special occasion with our loved ones—while being real about the challenges too.
by Ruth Reichl
The perfect fall read—and the way this woman writes about food! So good!
Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table
by Ruth Reichl
Another Reichl book that will have you drooling over the way she describes food, as well as thinking about how food has shaped your life.
