Laying Down & Picking Up

Growing up, I had the gift of spending a lot of time with my grandparents. One of the things we did most together was play games—namely, card games. Of course at first, it was Go Fish. Then as my sisters and I got older it became Rummy, Crazy eights, and Spades. I still remember my grandmother teaching me how to shuffle. But if there was anything all that time playing cards taught me, it was that it’s all about: What you lay down, and what you pick up. This is especially true in Rummy. If you’ve played it before, you [...]

On Making a Good Cup of Coffee

I don’t know what kind of coffee drinker you are. I don’t know if you are the “get it on your way to work,” the “Starbucks barista knows my order,” or the “constantly using my Keurig” kind of coffee person. I don’t know if you take it cold brew, french press, Fair Trade, cream and sugar, black, latte or cappuccino. Or, if you’re even a coffee person at all (bare with me if you aren’t). But if you are, there is a good chance you will feel my pain over what I am about to tell you. For a while [...]

Love Learn Lead September 7, 2017

Labor Day, and our last long weekend of summer, has passed. The packed days of fall are beckoning. There are new schedules, new opportunities, and perhaps even new changes happening in our lives. Though some things from previous seasons have ended, there are still responsibilities and roles that haven’t changed. And so early September becomes the time of year in which we are trying to juggle both the old and the new. We wonder to ourselves: Can we really do it all?  But the answer varies depending on how much we’re trying to take on. And the solution is controversial [...]

Post 100

This post is my one-hundredth post on MelissaSchlies.com. 100 feels like a very big number. Yet, I haven’t even been blogging a year yet. Some bloggers post more often than I do and pass this mark a lot sooner. Other bloggers have been in the game for while. A few have even surpassed the decade mark. Their followers are in the five and six digits, where mine are still hard to calculate. As a newish blogger, it doesn’t take a lot to feel small. When you think about it, there are probably millions of bloggers world wide. This means that [...]

Courage After Failure

Two weeks before I moved into college, I was in my first car accident. That night had been like any summer evening for a teenager living in a small town. There was nothing to do. So, I decided to take my younger sisters to get ice cream. My parents let me have the car, and for a reason I don’t remember, we headed to the grocery store instead of the Friendly’s down the street. At the store we picked out a half gallon of rocky road and a few bottles of soda. We checked out, then my sisters and I [...]

Love Learn Lead July 27, 2017

Its seems like yesterday, we were closing out June. But here we are, almost to August. The summer, as usual, is going by too quickly. Here in Pennsylvania, we’re trying to get outside as much as we can when the humidity isn’t bad, and we’re living on smoothies made out of the fresh local fruit we’ve picked. Wherever you are, I hope you are finding moments to rest as well as seizing opportunities for adventure and fun, as they come along. For today’s Love, Learn, Lead, I share some of my favorite bread recipes, a brave quote from Brene Brown, [...]

Don’t Worry, That’s Normal

Have you ever watched a professional make pizza? They start by tossing a smooth ball of dough in the air. Then with the back of their hands, they slowly and rhythmically stretch it out into an almost perfectly round pizza crust. They make it look so easy. For some reason, when I began making bread from scratch, that pizza dough is what I envisioned, yet it did not become my reality. Early on, my goal in baking bread was to make something healthy we could use for sandwiches. So Tony surprised me with a cookbook that would teach me how [...]

Learn: How to Recover From Your Vacation

About a month ago, my best friend and I each went away on different trips. Neither were overly adventurous, but nor were they super restful either. Then three days after we returned, we checked in over text. We were both exhausted. Our bodies were detoxing from eating food that we don’t normally eat, and we were finding it hard to readjust back to our normal lives. Through our conversation, I was reminded, that though it seems completely opposite of how things should be, sometimes: We really need a vacation after our vacation.  Whether we’ve spent a whole week at a [...]

How To Make Things Work

I don’t know about you, but there is this desire within me for things to work. If I plug in a light and flip on the switch, I want the light to turn on. If I turn on my computer, and open up an application or internet browser, I want to it to run smoothly. And when we bought our car, I put the key in the ignition and expected it to turn on. I think we can all agree: The world is better when things work.  But last week, I flipped the switch in our living room and a [...]

Strawberry Fields

A few weeks ago, on a Saturday, Tony and I got up early. We got dressed, put on our “don’t mind if they get muddy” shoes, and headed out to our favorite strawberry farm. The day before, they unexpectedly announced that they would be opening for a short time that weekend for the first picking. We love strawberries—especially freshly picked ones. So we weren’t going to pass up an opportunity to pick them earlier than we expected. As we drove up the dirt road leading to the farm, we wondered how many people would already be picking when we’d arrive. [...]
