If The Shoe Fits

Before I officially begin today’s post, I have to confess I have never been super into fashion. Through most of high school, I wore big baggy shirts with jeans. In college, I wasn’t much better. And makeup, until my mid-twenties, was always touch and go. I have always believed that what is most important about a person is what is on the inside. But recently, a podcast I listened to got me thinking about the importance of what we wear, so here we go: The guest on the episode I was listening to that day, was a personal stylist. During [...]

Got to Start Somewhere

“Never compare your beginning to someone else's middle. Comparison is poison.” —Jon Acuff, Start Every now and then, I wonder what success was like before the internet. As it began to really take off as I was getting out of school, and starting my first career, its hard for me to remember a  time when famous people weren’t just on TV or in magazines. It’s hard to remember when success didn’t look like going viral or blowing up our social media feeds. The internet has culturally changed our definition of success. But it has also muddled our view of what [...]

Love: My Favorite Books from 2017

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.” ― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye I totally relate to what Salinger is saying in these words. Every now and then, I read a book and it feels like I have begun an incredible conversation with the author. Only, with the last page, not knowing the writer, the conversation ends. It [...]

Love Learn Lead December 7, 2017

Happy Thursday! This past weekend, Tony and I went to a Christmas Tree farm with our closest friends, to cut down our tree. It has become a great tradition over the past few years. One that usually entails all the guys going ahead to scope out the best tree, while us girls slowly walk behind, shoving our hands in our pockets to keep warm, and talking about our favorite TV shows or catching up on the week. The guys find the trees, we give our approval, and then they are cut down and strapped to our cars. There is something [...]

When Your Name Isn’t On The List

At the end of eighth grade, I tried out for the high school football cheerleading squad. Wearing an oversized t-shirt and gym shorts, I lined up with my friends and the other girls trying out. For three or four afternoons after school, I learned what a Herkie was and sort of how to do one. I was taught to clap a certain way, how to belt out cheers, and to smile constantly. And at the end of the week, I performed a cheer in front of three judges to show them I had what it took to be a cheerleader. [...]

In Search of the Perfect Picture

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” —John Lennon More than any other social media, Instagram is to blame for any amount of time I waste in my life. Ok, any wasted time is my fault—but Instagram is usually the cause. Photo’s of my friend’s adventures or Insta-stories of people living in cool places (check out @GirlinFlorence if you want a fabulous taste of Italy)—all of it, sucks me in. Almost daily I find myself mindlessly scrolling through photo’s I have already seen, and I have to tell myself to put the phone down. Beautiful [...]

Crying Over Spilt Milk

Once, when Tony and I were at the grocery story, we arrived in the dairy department just as a little girl was grabbing a gallon of milk out of the refrigerator for her mother. She was small and the jug was big. Within seconds it slipped out of her hands and crashed to the floor. Cracked on one side, milk started gushing out all around her. Without thinking, I reached down, grabbed the handle to the milk jug and turned it “crack-side-up,” so the milk would stop spilling. I had worked at a grocery store all throughout high school and [...]

Learn: How to Build Healthy Routines

Whether we realize it or not, we build routines often. One day, a coworker happens to eat lunch at the same time we do, so we eat together. Then we eat together the next day. Before we know it, we are texting each other daily about when to meet for lunch. Or, we find a coffee shop on our way to work that makes the perfect latte. Soon, we are no longer making coffee at home. Instead, we are in line for our latte exactly ten minutes before we have to be at work—everyday. Sadly, we also create routines that [...]

Wouldn’t it be nice if life was easy?

Wouldn’t it be nice if life was easy? That like my coffee maker—if you just remember to put a few simple parts together—everything would brew smooth and rich? That the changing of seasons would become like riding a bicycle; we’d remember our routines for each one and slip into them with the page change of the calendar. Only, that’s not how life is. We’ve all lived long enough to know that not every fall is the same as the last, nor are any of the other seasons for that matter. The routines of last fall very likely won’t work this [...]

Love Learn Lead September 21, 2017

As I have shared many times before, my favorite way to mark the seasons, here in Pennsylvania, is through the fruit harvesting calendar. Over the summer, I talked about our love for picking strawberries and blueberries, but now we are back to apples. Soon—provided our schedules line up—we will meet our closest friends at a local apple orchard and pick close to a bushel. Eating an apple or two as we walk between the rows of trees—branches heavy with Braeburn or Golden Delicious—we will begin our celebration of fall. But just as summer brought us berries, and fall is giving [...]
