When I Thought Discipline Was a Dirty Word

When I was little, and my mother was very young in her faith, she went through what is commonly known in Christian circles as a legalistic phase. In our home, following Jesus became about doing what the Bible said to a “T.” It also meant throwing out anything in our home (including my Barbies), that could be of the devil. As a kid, I didn’t understand any of it, but as an adult I am beginning to see the rational. People fall into a legalistic phase when their new found relationship with Jesus is so life changing that they begin [...]

Love Learn Lead January 26, 2017

Happy Thursday! We have almost made it all the way through January. Only 53 days until spring! I don’t like to rush time, but sometimes winter feels unending and I hate to be stuck inside. Where we live, we get snow that turns to rain, or just plain freezing rain, so there aren’t too many walks in the snow for us. Also, when we do get a wonderfully sunny day, it is still too cold to spend much time outside. So, no complaints here if the winter doesn’t drag on this year! Here is today’s Love, Learn, Lead. Enjoy! Love [...]

Headspace

Besides wedding planning, it could be said that the first true test of marriage is moving all of your belongings into a new shared space. When we were dating, my husband Tony and I each lived in our own fully furnished one-bedroom apartments. So when we got engaged, it became clear that we were going to have to find a new, bigger place to live. Not yet ready to dive into homeownership, we went on a search for a two-bedroom apartment. After settling on a place, the fun challenge of combining our lives began. We first moved Tony in, then [...]

Learn: How I Gave Up Sugar

It took me a long time to come clean. To admit that I had a problem. To finally say I was an addict. Sure, my drug was sold openly next to the flour and baking soda, and not so secretly in the candy aisle, so legally, there was no crime involved. But I had a full on sugar addiction. One afternoon, in high school, when I sat on the floor in my bedroom, eating an entire bag of Starburst jelly beans—I thought the only consequence was a sick feeling in my stomach and a sugar coma. I wasn’t paying enough [...]

It’s all in the Shaking: Finding Balance part 2

Part 1 can be found here. Until, out of no where, a crisis occurred or a holiday season came up, swamping any semblance of balance my life was beginning to enjoy. It was as if a cyclone blew threw my calendar for an entire month (or two). There would be late nights and early mornings. I would get up every day feeling like a zombie. I drank extra coffee, and made sure to use enough concealer to hide the circles under my eyes. I was exhausted and balance seemed like a long lost dream. Balance, felt like a destination I [...]

It’s All The In Shaking, Finding Balance part 1

Deep breath. We have made it to the second week of January. The Holidays are sadly over, and we are back to our regular schedules. Only, getting back into a routine after such a busy season, can be difficult (especially, if it involves a stomach bug). In fact, I struggled with it for years until yoga taught me something important about finding and keeping a balanced life. If you’ve ever done yoga, you know there is typically a portion of every session dedicated to physical balance. For one of the more common moves, Tree, the instructor has you stand on [...]

7 Ways to Keep Your NYR!

Happy New Year! This is usually the post where most bloggers tell their readers about their New Year’s Resolutions (NYRs), but if I am honest, I have never made one. Sure, I have told myself many Decembers that in January—I am going to eat better. But the only thing that improved my eating from the former month to the latter, was that there were no Christmas parties in January. I have, however, made quite a few changes to my life over the years—from changing how I eat (including giving up sugar and gluten), to exercising, to taking up more than [...]

Lead a Wonderful Life

Every family has their traditions over the Holidays. Growing up, Christmas Eve became the time my immediate family celebrated ours. It usually involved making a bunch of fun snacks that we would eat instead of dinner. Then we’d open presents, and after, watch a Christmas movie while eating a Friendly’s ice cream roll. One year, my dad introduced us to the 1946 movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Though I was young and not used to watching things in black and white, I liked it. And it continues to be a movie that I watch almost yearly. However, as I get [...]

Sometimes, We Light Candles

“Cause baby, you’re a firework, come on let your colors burn…let’m go awe, awe, awe, as they shoot across the sky-ay-ay…” A couple of years ago, Katy Perry’s song, Firework, was one I turned up the volume for when I was in the car. I liked its message of throwing off whatever was keeping you from being yourself. However since then, I have begun rethinking my attachment to it. Thanks to a conversation I had about a year ago with a young leader, I am realizing that using a firework to describe ourselves, may be too short-lived of a metaphor. [...]

Falling Behind

I am sure I am not alone when I say I have more than one awkward memory from gym class. The worst, however, always involved running. I couldn’t run. I had terrible asthma that was always awful in the fall—the very time my gym teacher scheduled us to run the mile. And though I had a doctor’s note to get me out of it, she insisted that I try. So I’d line up with my classmates on the track, our teacher would say, “Go,” and in the middle of the pack, I would start jogging. But as we began to [...]
