What Holds Us Back: Knowing Too Much

A few months after I moved to Pennsylvania, I was in a car accident. In a rush to answer a call, an EMT vehicle driving in front of me, unexpectedly backed up over the hood of my car. It had missed the street it was supposed to take. And, even though I hadn’t been following it too closely, and had braked when the driver stopped, he hit me.  My car was a mess. I was injured. I was in a new state, and I didn’t have a clue where to send my car to get fixed, or who to ask [...]

Love Learn Lead April 4, 2019

If January is the time for new resolutions, April is the month to pick them up again, and take action. Spring is here. The weather is better. The darkness of winter is over. And though there may be April showers, there is no time like the present to work toward those goals that won’t leave you alone. You know, those goals that slip into your thoughts when you’re driving in your car. The ones that give you a tinge of shame when something in a conversation reminds you of how far you have to go to accomplish them. Or the [...]

What is Holding You Back?

A little over a month ago, I got the Winter Blues. I was tired of the grey skies, cold weather, and being inside. Only, it felt like it was more than that. Just as the winter seemed never ending, so too did a few circumstances in my life. Being inside day after day, only seemed to accentuate my situation, and I just wanted an escape.  So, I turned to beach reads. You know, those books you’re supposed to read while you’re actually sitting in the sand, on the beach, in the sun? The ones that take place in dreamy summer [...]

Leadership #22: Your Attitude Matters

The hardest times to lead aren’t only when everything is going south and you’re just trying to keep things together. They can also be in the mundane. When the job before you and your team is to do the long slow work of building or preparing for your next big thing. When there are menial or seemingly unimportant tasks to be done. Tasks that no one is ever going to notice. Jobs that won’t get applause. Yet things that must be completed to get to where you want to go. It is in these times that, Attitude is everything. Working [...]

Learn: That Weird Place In The Middle

It may surprise you to learn, I was unhappy to find myself working at a university bookstore after graduating college. As you might know, I love books. I was an English major. And, one of my favorite things to do is to wander the aisles of a bookstore with a cup of coffee in my hand. For me it’s pretty close to heaven. So why wasn’t I happy? Well, for one, shelving text books isn’t the same as reading a fantastic novel. Retail is hard work. But more than anything, my unhappiness wasn’t about where I was, it was about [...]

A Cold & Broken Hallelujah

The train moved through the dark subway tunnels of Boston, before entering Park Street Station. This was my stop. I got off the train and made my way to the stairs. Rather than heading up to fresh air, and the sun setting on Park Street Church, I descended further to where I’d catch the Red Line Train.  As I reached the bottom of the steps, on the platform between the tracks, I saw a man playing a white electric guitar. Crooning into a microphone, he stood with a small amp at his side. An open guitar case lay at his [...]

I’m Hearing Voices, How About You?

“When I was your age, I had to walk to school through the snow, barefoot. And it was uphill both ways.”  How many of us heard those words, or something similar, growing up? In other words, life is hard, so suck it up.  Perhaps that is why, when I was twenty-two, I was walking through the snow with bronchial pneumonia, to get to a bus that would take me to work. I just thought that’s what adults do. We ignore our ailments and suppress our pain. We “suck it up,” and do what is expected of us. Only now, I [...]

Being a Grown-Up

Perhaps I watched too many Disney movies as a kid, but I used to believe that if I did all the right things, my life wouldn’t be hard. As if pain only comes to those who get into trouble. As if struggle is a choice. But then, I found myself pursuing a career with little room for women. I found a lump and thought I might have cancer at twenty-three. When I finally got a job in my career field, I moved to another state and learned that beginning a new life in a new town isn’t so easy. And [...]

My Brain Is Wired For Coffee

If you’ve learned anything about me by now, there’s a good chance, it’s that I like coffee. Ok, truthfully? It’s that I LOVE coffee. Drinking a good cup filled with that steaming black liquid, is one of my favorite parts of almost every day.  Only, around November, I started drinking more than just coffee. Before you get any bad ideas, let me tell you I started making mocha’s at home. Into the bottom of my mug, I’d toss a tablespoon of cocoa powder. Then, I’d add a little more than a tablespoon of maple syrup (the real stuff). I’d stir [...]

Lead: Making Space for Change

“The secret of leadership is simple: Do what you believe in. Paint a picture of the future. Go there. People will follow.”   —Seth Godin So many of us seem to react to life more than we prepare for it. We do what we’re told. We wait for permission. We color in the lines. And we put off the dreams, goals, or lifestyle changes we know will rock the boat. Even when they’re the things we think about or long for the most.  Why do we do this? Deep down we all know—it’s because it’s scary. It’s risky to put [...]
