The Hardest No

“…The very things you think you need most desperately are the things that can transform you the most profoundly when you do finally decide to release them.” —Shauna Niequist Sometimes, the hardest no’s in our lives are the ones we have to tell ourselves. They’re the ones that often begin with a whisper, “I am not going to have dessert this week.” “I am only going to have one drink.” Only they’re ignored when the stress gets too much, or everyone else is having another.  We don’t listen to the whisper, so we say it a little louder to ourselves. [...]

Love Learn Lead November 8, 2018

It hardly seems possible that we’re already into November. Perhaps it’s because it took until the middle of October to finally begin to feel like fall. But, as soon as it was cool enough to wear big sweaters and boots, I had a feeling that before we knew it, the Holiday’s would be on our door step.  Thankfully though, we have a few weeks yet before Thanksgiving, and a little more time to enjoy the beauty of this season. For me, this fall has looked like coming up with new paleo recipes involving the apples we picked at a local [...]

No-vember

My favorite word growing up was, “Yes.” If you think about it, your’s probably was too. It was the answer we wanted for every good question: “Mom, can I ride my bike with my friends?” “Yes.” “Dad, can we go out for ice cream?” “Yes.”  “Mom, can I stay up late?” “No.” (bummer) “No” just doesn’t have the same happy ring to it as “yes” does. Especially because it usually means we’re not getting what we want. But “yes” isn’t only our favorite answer, for many of us, it is also our favorite reply.  In High School and college, yes [...]

Learn: How to Tell If You’ve Found Your Calling

Traditionally, I am not a big hat person. So when we went to Ireland for vacation this year, the last thing I ever expected to buy was a hat. Maybe a new pair of gloves or a wool blanket—but not a hat. Only, that is what happened. One morning, on our way to Dingle, Tony and I stopped in the charming thatched roof town of Adare. I needed a cup of coffee, and it was a good place to take a break from driving. We found a parking spot, and then a cup of cappuccino for me, before moseying [...]

When Your Path is Different

It was almost nine in the morning, and if I didn’t hurry, I might be late to my meeting. I grabbed my purse and notebook from the passenger seat, and got out of my car. It was late fall, and flurries had just begun to fly through the air.  As I crossed the parking lot, I pulled my unzipped denim jacket around me and hugged my notebook to my chest, to try to keep warm. Just up ahead of me, I saw another youth pastor also hurrying to get to our local youth worker meeting. When we got to the [...]

Love Learn Lead October 4, 2018

Happy fall, friends! I hope wherever you are, the weather is cool not cold, the leaves are turning a lovely shade of red or yellow, and there are pumpkin spice latte’s or hot apple cider in abundance. But only, if you’re into this season the way I am.  The first day of fall for us in Pennsylvania was sunny and comfortably in the sixties. The summer humidity lifted, and I was able to wear flannel and bake in our apartment without overheating—which made me so happy. But something that makes me even happier than fall, is whenever I see someone [...]

Step Back September

About a month ago, Tony and I went peach picking. We drove to a local farm, and bought a box big enough to fit a whole half a bushel of peaches. Then, we trudged through the wet and muddy orchard to where they were picking that day.  It had rained hard the night before. Every time we’d reach up and pick a peach, all the trees’ leaves would shower water down our arms and onto our heads. But we weren’t deterred, and we came away with close to seventy beautiful peaches.  What did we do with all of them, you [...]

Learning How To Make Change

When I was a kid, and my family moved to a new town, I wasn’t asked if I wanted to move. When my parents decided to have more kids, they didn’t consult me. At two years old, I couldn’t tell them to send my new baby sister back to where she came from (though I did try). And when my mom decided to stop homeschooling my sisters and me, to send us to public school, it wasn’t a choice.  When we’re kids, most big changes aren’t up to us. Rather, those choices fall under our parent’s jurisdiction. At least, they’re [...]

Why We Need to Choose: Thoughts on Food, Life, & FOMO

Have you ever gone out to eat with friends, but when the food came, you wished you had ordered something else? You look around to see the people you’re with all digging into meals that look so much better, and you begin to feel jealous. Even if your meal is OK, it’s hard to appreciate it while you’re watching someone else eat something really good, right across from you. You try to hide it, but honestly, You want what they have. A few months ago, Tony and I went away for a weekend with our closest friends, and one night [...]
