When Leaders Rest

“Right now, we take better care of our smart phones than we do of ourselves. Like I bet everyone…right now knows how much battery remains on their smart phones—if it gets below thirteen percent we get anxious…’what would happen if it died?’…Until I collapsed, I was unaware I was at zero percent.” — Ariana Huffington, Interview with Chase Jarvis   Do you know how much “battery power” you have left? Not in your smart phone, but in you? When I first got out of college, I thought that to succeed, I had to be “on” at all times. No matter what [...]

Love Learn Lead April 19, 2018

Hello Friends. We have made it past the middle of April. Hopefully, wherever you are, there are promising signs of spring—and not more rain than necessary. This weekend, Tony and I are gearing up for a trip to the Finger Lakes, in New York, with our closest friends. A few snow storms earlier this month, made winter feel that much longer and we are ready to get out of town. We are praying for good weather, but know that whatever we get we are going to make the most of the weekend. I hope that no matter your weekend plans, [...]

Love Learn Lead February 15, 2018

When I was a kid, the thing I remember wanting more than anything else in the world, was a best friend. I really don’t know why this was such a big desire. It could have been that I was homeschooled for a little while, so meeting new friends was rare. But I have these memories of meeting new little girls, and wondering, “Is she going to be my best friend?” Perhaps, I also watched a bit too much of Anne of Green Gables. Only, this desire to have a friend who knew and understood me, didn’t go away with adolescence. [...]

Love Learn Lead January 4, 2018

Ok, I admit it. I did it. When writing the date for today’s post, I typed 2017. It is going to take a few times of writing dates down to solidify in my mind that it is indeed 2018. But here we are, having entered another year. This past Monday, Tony and I left the frozen tundra that is Wisconsin, where we were visiting family, and are now back at home in Pennsylvania. Though where we live has yet to fully feel like home, we are eternally grateful the winters here are a little milder than where we grew up. [...]

Love: My Favorite Books from 2017

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.” ― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye I totally relate to what Salinger is saying in these words. Every now and then, I read a book and it feels like I have begun an incredible conversation with the author. Only, with the last page, not knowing the writer, the conversation ends. It [...]

Love Learn Lead November 2, 2017

Have I mentioned, I love fall? There is something about the leaves changing color, and the weather getting cooler that seems to bring out my inner Martha Stewart (that I didn’t even know I had). All of a sudden, I want to light candles, bake pumpkin bread, and knit—all while drinking my favorite fall flavored latte! Fall is fabulous. But as much as it also makes me want to hike among the red and yellow trees, there is work for all of us to do. There’s our jobs, our responsibilities, and for some of us—there  are changes we are anticipating [...]

Crying Over Spilt Milk

Once, when Tony and I were at the grocery story, we arrived in the dairy department just as a little girl was grabbing a gallon of milk out of the refrigerator for her mother. She was small and the jug was big. Within seconds it slipped out of her hands and crashed to the floor. Cracked on one side, milk started gushing out all around her. Without thinking, I reached down, grabbed the handle to the milk jug and turned it “crack-side-up,” so the milk would stop spilling. I had worked at a grocery store all throughout high school and [...]

Love Learn Lead August 10, 2017

As we begin to close out the first full week of August, the world has begun saying the end of summer is on it’s way. Stores have been advertising “back to school” sales for a few weeks now,  telling us the long, warm days of summer are numbered. But here, you will find none of that! Here, for this month we are all about the idea of travel and escape. Monday I began to share with you a story from a trip we took to Ireland, and today, I am sharing a favorite memory from my first trip to Chile. [...]

Love: Books About Travel

One of the best parts of summer is vacation. Whether for a long weekend or a whole week, there is nothing that compares with taking time off. The only thing that makes a vacation better, is if you have the chance to getaway. Whether to the beach, a new city, or some faraway land, there is something about traveling that helps us unplug from our lives. It gives our brains a break, and offers us a new perspective on life and the world. To me, traveling is the best. But, it isn’t every summer that we can getaway. Sometimes it [...]

Love Learn Lead July 13, 2017

Somehow we’ve made it to blueberry season here in Pennsylvania. This means that on the Saturday’s we are free, we are getting up early and picking as many delicious berries as it takes to fill our buckets. There is just nothing like fresh blueberries. I hope that wherever you are, you too are eating blueberries—or at least enjoying all that summer in your town has to offer. Today, we are continuing our courage theme with a book that I loved, something I learned by sticking around when things were hard, and a great leadership quote. May you be blessed this [...]
