Learning How To Make Change

When I was a kid, and my family moved to a new town, I wasn’t asked if I wanted to move. When my parents decided to have more kids, they didn’t consult me. At two years old, I couldn’t tell them to send my new baby sister back to where she came from (though I did try). And when my mom decided to stop homeschooling my sisters and me, to send us to public school, it wasn’t a choice.  When we’re kids, most big changes aren’t up to us. Rather, those choices fall under our parent’s jurisdiction. At least, they’re [...]

Learning, It’s Up To You

You know those times when someone older and wiser, gets up on their soap box, then begins their latest diatribe with the words: “There are two kinds of people in this world…” It’s always bothered me. Mostly because I find humanity to be extremely eclectic and varied. But also because to break up people into two camps seems very narrow-minded. Only, today—that is what I am going to do. Not because I think there really are only two kinds of people, but rather because in life, there are choices all of us have where there are only two options. An [...]

What You Can Do

Confession: There are days life overwhelms me. If I were to take this confession a litter further, I would also admit I have more overwhelming days than I’d like. I have mornings where I feel the weight of writing something that will matter. Days when our world’s brokenness feels beyond repair. Afternoons where the changes I’ve been praying for and working toward, feel like they will never happen. And nights where I just feel too tired to do it all again tomorrow. Life is hard. At times it feels a little too impossible. And I’m sensing, you can relate. Because, [...]

When Our Story Is Too Small

When I was a kid, I was always telling stories. I had a BIG imagination. With my friends or sisters, we’d create these elaborate, imaginary places for us to live. Then we’d create some sort of conflict or drama to work through together. Whether imagining life on a ranch (I loved horses), or as singing and dancing pop stars, we were never bored. Oh, what childhood looked like before technology. But the interested thing about our imagination, is that it doesn’t leave us when we become adults. We just seem to use it for different things. Sadly, it’s often the [...]

Leaving Home

Out of all the relationships we have in our life, our family ones are typically the strongest. For good or bad, they are the people who have the power to impact our lives the most. After all, they are the first people to tell us where to be strong and when to be afraid. To tell us whether the world is a friendly or fearful place. More than anything though, They are the first people to tell us who we are. Only at some point, we have to learn all of these things for ourselves. We have to take what [...]

Easier Said, Than Done

“Just give it a try.” “Put yourself out there.” “You know what you should do…” We’ve all been there. When we’re the ones that need something to change. When we’re on the side of a conversation where we’re getting the advice, and those on the other side are saying things we don’t want to hear. Not because what they have to say is wrong, but because it’s hard. They keep talking until we finally say: “It’s easier said, than done.” And like that—unless our friends or family are relentless—the conversation is over. We start talking about the football game or [...]

What To Do With All Those Leftover (Feeling)s

If you’re one of those people who love Thanksgiving food (turkey, mashed potatoes, pie, etc.), then you know one of the best parts of the holiday is the leftovers. Some of my favorite memories of Thanksgiving involve eating pie for dinner, or making late night turkey sandwiches because everyone’s still up. Not to mention, eating roasted veggies with fried eggs for breakfast.  Add a cup of coffee, and that’s what I call a good morning. Thanksgiving leftovers are the best—at least when we’re talking about food. But in my experience, food hasn’t always been the only leftover from the holiday. [...]

Stuck

Six years ago, on a hot, sunny Saturday over Labor Day weekend, I stood at the top of a waterfall. I stared at the cool pool of water collecting just before spilling over the edge, and debated sticking my feet in. I didn’t hesitate long. Tony had gone further down the trail with his camera, to try and capture the waterfall from the bottom. I could see him from where I was standing, and knew I had a least a few minutes before it would be time for us to head back to camp. So, I took off my hiking [...]

Love Learn Lead August 10, 2017

As we begin to close out the first full week of August, the world has begun saying the end of summer is on it’s way. Stores have been advertising “back to school” sales for a few weeks now,  telling us the long, warm days of summer are numbered. But here, you will find none of that! Here, for this month we are all about the idea of travel and escape. Monday I began to share with you a story from a trip we took to Ireland, and today, I am sharing a favorite memory from my first trip to Chile. [...]

Courage After Failure

Two weeks before I moved into college, I was in my first car accident. That night had been like any summer evening for a teenager living in a small town. There was nothing to do. So, I decided to take my younger sisters to get ice cream. My parents let me have the car, and for a reason I don’t remember, we headed to the grocery store instead of the Friendly’s down the street. At the store we picked out a half gallon of rocky road and a few bottles of soda. We checked out, then my sisters and I [...]
