Learn: About The Changes We Want

When I finally got a job in youth ministry, after a year of searching and waiting, I almost couldn’t believe it. Accepting the job offer however, felt like—what I imagine—jumping out of a plane feels like. At twenty-three I was moving to a new state with a new job that felt bigger and grander than I could have pictured. It was exhilarating, and it was scary. Five years later, after a season of both savoring and struggling with my singleness—Tony proposed. I can’t explain to you the emotional high I felt when he ask me to be his wife. I [...]

Freezing Time

Have you ever had a moment you wished could last forever? A moment that couldn’t be better even if you had planned it yourself? A day or even afternoon, you wanted time to stand still? I know I can think of a few. Like the time our entire family, flew in from all parts of the country, to celebrate Christmas together. Or more recently, when I spent a slow afternoon, sitting outside in Tuscany with Tony, finishing a bottle of Chianti Classico. Such moments are never long enough. How about a season of your life? Have you ever had a [...]

Love Learn Lead October 5, 2017

Ever feel like some seasons sneak up on you? Like one day you are worrying about sunscreen and the next, you’re trudging through a field looking for the best looking pumpkin. Or, we just begin to enjoy fall, and all the stores start bringing out their Christmas line. I have to admit, that’s how I am feeling this fall. Part of it has to do with going on vacation right at the beginning of September. While my friends were putting their kids back on the school bus, we were still very much in summer mode. But then the day we [...]

Crying Over Spilt Milk

Once, when Tony and I were at the grocery story, we arrived in the dairy department just as a little girl was grabbing a gallon of milk out of the refrigerator for her mother. She was small and the jug was big. Within seconds it slipped out of her hands and crashed to the floor. Cracked on one side, milk started gushing out all around her. Without thinking, I reached down, grabbed the handle to the milk jug and turned it “crack-side-up,” so the milk would stop spilling. I had worked at a grocery store all throughout high school and [...]

Learn: How to Build Healthy Routines

Whether we realize it or not, we build routines often. One day, a coworker happens to eat lunch at the same time we do, so we eat together. Then we eat together the next day. Before we know it, we are texting each other daily about when to meet for lunch. Or, we find a coffee shop on our way to work that makes the perfect latte. Soon, we are no longer making coffee at home. Instead, we are in line for our latte exactly ten minutes before we have to be at work—everyday. Sadly, we also create routines that [...]

Wouldn’t it be nice if life was easy?

Wouldn’t it be nice if life was easy? That like my coffee maker—if you just remember to put a few simple parts together—everything would brew smooth and rich? That the changing of seasons would become like riding a bicycle; we’d remember our routines for each one and slip into them with the page change of the calendar. Only, that’s not how life is. We’ve all lived long enough to know that not every fall is the same as the last, nor are any of the other seasons for that matter. The routines of last fall very likely won’t work this [...]

Love Learn Lead September 21, 2017

As I have shared many times before, my favorite way to mark the seasons, here in Pennsylvania, is through the fruit harvesting calendar. Over the summer, I talked about our love for picking strawberries and blueberries, but now we are back to apples. Soon—provided our schedules line up—we will meet our closest friends at a local apple orchard and pick close to a bushel. Eating an apple or two as we walk between the rows of trees—branches heavy with Braeburn or Golden Delicious—we will begin our celebration of fall. But just as summer brought us berries, and fall is giving [...]

Laying Down & Picking Up

Growing up, I had the gift of spending a lot of time with my grandparents. One of the things we did most together was play games—namely, card games. Of course at first, it was Go Fish. Then as my sisters and I got older it became Rummy, Crazy eights, and Spades. I still remember my grandmother teaching me how to shuffle. But if there was anything all that time playing cards taught me, it was that it’s all about: What you lay down, and what you pick up. This is especially true in Rummy. If you’ve played it before, you [...]

Love Learn Lead— Join Me For Coffee?

When I write for this blog, I sometimes imagine we are meeting for coffee. That rather than looking at a computer screen, we are able to look into each other’s eyes and actually know how the other is doing. I think of the things I would say to you if you were having a bad day or facing some unforeseen struggle. I also think of the things I would say to you if you were doing unimaginably well—how we’d celebrate together. To paraphrase that old song, life (and love) is a battlefield. It is hard, and often we have to [...]

On Making a Good Cup of Coffee

I don’t know what kind of coffee drinker you are. I don’t know if you are the “get it on your way to work,” the “Starbucks barista knows my order,” or the “constantly using my Keurig” kind of coffee person. I don’t know if you take it cold brew, french press, Fair Trade, cream and sugar, black, latte or cappuccino. Or, if you’re even a coffee person at all (bare with me if you aren’t). But if you are, there is a good chance you will feel my pain over what I am about to tell you. For a while [...]
