Learn: When Celebrating is Courageous

It’s November. Thanksgiving will soon be here. But have you ever thought about how interesting the timing of this holiday is? Growing up near Plymouth—the actual place of the first Thanksgiving feast—as kids, we learned a lot about the Pilgrims. We learned about why they left England (and Holland) to come to the New World. And how when they landed on the shores of their new home, winter was fast approaching. They didn’t have time to plant crops, let alone to reap a harvest. Food was scarce. That first winter, people died. Those who made it to spring, made friends [...]

A Love Affair With Lines

This might sound weird or, if you know me very well, not surprising. But I like lines. Not the lines you stand in—like at the grocery store or amusement parks. And not the lines that keep people divided—the ones that say one group of people is better than another. No, I don’t like those lines at all. But I do, like lines. I like the lines that directors tape on stages, to tell people where to stand so their performance can make the most impact. I like the lines painted on highways and in parking lots, that keep cars from [...]

Love Learn Lead November 9, 2017

We’re not even to the middle of November, and yet the Christmas Creep is well underway. Music and displays in stores are already trying to get us to start our gift shopping, when I just want to hold on to the sunny days of fall a little bit longer. So for this reason, no more mention of Christmas. For today’s Love Learn Lead, I am sharing a recipe I love, a few books that have helped me learn an important lesson about life, and a crucial leadership tip to consider this season. Enjoy! Love One of the things I love [...]

In Search of the Perfect Picture

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” —John Lennon More than any other social media, Instagram is to blame for any amount of time I waste in my life. Ok, any wasted time is my fault—but Instagram is usually the cause. Photo’s of my friend’s adventures or Insta-stories of people living in cool places (check out @GirlinFlorence if you want a fabulous taste of Italy)—all of it, sucks me in. Almost daily I find myself mindlessly scrolling through photo’s I have already seen, and I have to tell myself to put the phone down. Beautiful [...]

Love Learn Lead November 2, 2017

Have I mentioned, I love fall? There is something about the leaves changing color, and the weather getting cooler that seems to bring out my inner Martha Stewart (that I didn’t even know I had). All of a sudden, I want to light candles, bake pumpkin bread, and knit—all while drinking my favorite fall flavored latte! Fall is fabulous. But as much as it also makes me want to hike among the red and yellow trees, there is work for all of us to do. There’s our jobs, our responsibilities, and for some of us—there  are changes we are anticipating [...]

When We’re The Answer

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 It’s a truth I stumbled upon by accident. One I said yes to without even knowing it was being offered. It is a truth I believe we need to speak about. And a truth that our world needs us badly to act upon. The truth is this: Sometimes, we’re the answer.  In those times when we wish our phone would beep with a text from a friend or even a distant relative—anyone—to tell us we’re loved. [...]

Learn: How I got Unstuck

To best appreciate this post, read this first. The hot July sun tried to pierce through the trees, as we made our way down the trail, only the tree cover was thick enough to keep us cool. My sister and brother-in-law were visiting us from Massachusetts, and we were showing them one of our favorite places, Ricketts Glen State Park. At this point, we had hiked the trails that pass by the majority of the waterfalls in the park, but we wanted to make a stop at Adams Falls as well. We walked down the path to the bottom, where [...]

Stuck

Six years ago, on a hot, sunny Saturday over Labor Day weekend, I stood at the top of a waterfall. I stared at the cool pool of water collecting just before spilling over the edge, and debated sticking my feet in. I didn’t hesitate long. Tony had gone further down the trail with his camera, to try and capture the waterfall from the bottom. I could see him from where I was standing, and knew I had a least a few minutes before it would be time for us to head back to camp. So, I took off my hiking [...]

Love Learn Lead October 19, 2017

We’ve made it to the middle of October. I don’t know about you, but my fall has felt a little off-balance. With an unexpected trip and few unwanted colds, it has been hard to find my stride. Add this to the fact that all of our favorite TV shows are back on, and I have just wanted to curl up in front of the TV and forget about life. But because I know binge-watching is not the answer, I haven’t (mostly). Yet times of change—not just actual season changes—can have a similar affect as this fall has had on me. [...]

The Changes We Don’t Want

There are the changes in life that make our hearts feel like a firework soaring into the sky on the Forth of July, about to burst into flame. Tangibly, they look like acceptance letters, job promotions, marriage proposals, or even simply being asked out over text by that person you can’t get off your mind. These changes are the simple, sometimes long-awaited moments that send our lives into new and wonderful directions. But then, there are those other changes. The ones anxiety plagues us over. The ones we pray will never happen. Yet the ones that at some point in [...]
