Waiting at Christmas

This past November, just after Halloween, the stores set up their Christmas displays. Though what is known as the “Christmas Creep” has been happening for quite a few years now, I almost found it shocking. One afternoon, I was doing my grocery shopping, turned a corner, and found myself in Santa’s Workshop. All I could see was red and green, and everything within me seemed to say: It’s too soon. Christmas is such a wonderful and celebratory time of year. It’s a time of giving, going to parties, being with our loved ones, and for those of us who believe, [...]

Love: Christmas Gifts that Bring Hope

It’s the time of year again where we all start thinking about Christmas shopping. And like any good planner, I have a process. I make a list of our loved ones, and next to their names, my husband and I write down gift ideas. Then, for the things we can’t get online, we strategically plan our shopping routes to avoid making any unnecessary trips to over crowded stores. Not revolutionary, but it works—mostly. Some years, coming up with gift ideas is easy, or we’re blessed with help. Others, however, it seems our Christmas shopping will never end, as we search [...]

Sometimes, We Light Candles

“Cause baby, you’re a firework, come on let your colors burn…let’m go awe, awe, awe, as they shoot across the sky-ay-ay…” A couple of years ago, Katy Perry’s song, Firework, was one I turned up the volume for when I was in the car. I liked its message of throwing off whatever was keeping you from being yourself. However since then, I have begun rethinking my attachment to it. Thanks to a conversation I had about a year ago with a young leader, I am realizing that using a firework to describe ourselves, may be too short-lived of a metaphor. [...]

Love: Thanksgiving

When I was in the eighth grade, my English teacher had us write a story about Thanksgiving that had to include two of our family recipes. The idea was that we were to use the details from the recipes to describe making our turkey dinner. Having still a limited amount of experience in the Kitchen, this meant I had to sit down with my mom and go over her recipes. First we picked out two: Butternut Squash and Creamed Onions. Then, my mom went over how to chopped up the squash to cook it down, and how to make a [...]

Not So Thankful

Seven years ago this week, I made Thanksgiving dinner for the first time, and it was fun! It wasn’t stressful like it can be for so many—partly, because the total people coming, including me, was four. But also because that year excitement and gratitude seemed to be everywhere. It was in the air I breathed. It was bubbling up inside of me. I was in love. That year, I had started dating my now husband. After bumping into each other for over two years, we finally connected and discovered that like two pieces of a puzzle, we fit. We had a [...]

Learn: Running

Since I was five, I have had asthma. For years it was terrible, and as a middle schooler I began to believe that there were certain athletic things I would never be able to do. As I shared Monday, running was one of them. There were times growing up, I couldn’t breath sitting still, so it was hard to imagine that I would ever run, let alone enjoy it. Thankfully though, as I grew older my asthma became better. Over the past few years, with a lot of encouragement from my husband, I have started running. I don’t run fast [...]

Falling Behind

I am sure I am not alone when I say I have more than one awkward memory from gym class. The worst, however, always involved running. I couldn’t run. I had terrible asthma that was always awful in the fall—the very time my gym teacher scheduled us to run the mile. And though I had a doctor’s note to get me out of it, she insisted that I try. So I’d line up with my classmates on the track, our teacher would say, “Go,” and in the middle of the pack, I would start jogging. But as we began to [...]

Love Learn Lead November 10, 2016

On Tuesday night, like sportscasters tracking the plays of the Super Bowl, newscasters on every station sat at big fancy glass tables, and announced the election results state by state. But unlike the Super Bowl, this wasn’t a game. The “winners” role can’t be limited to a celebratory Facebook post and wearing their team’s jersey for a week. Nor, can the “losers” just go home to lick their wounds, or pretend it didn’t happen. Because, whether we will admit it or not, we are all on the same team. It is clear we don’t all agree on how our country [...]

Hopefully, I’m Rising

Almost five years ago, I was newly unemployed. I had left an amazing job in an unhealthy work environment, and knew that before moving on to my next job, I would have to take some time to heal (I had no idea how long I would be without a job). Being very aware of the things I had gone through, my husband was fully supportive of me taking some time off. He only said that if I wasn’t going to be working, then I had to do something. So I learned how to bake bread. It all started one day, [...]

Love Learn Lead November 3, 2016

Recently, I heard two writers talk about the days of the week as if they were personalities. They said Mondays’ were the “downer” days, Tuesdays’ were the real life, “get to work” days, and Fridays’ were the party days. But Thursdays are the in between days. The weekend is so close, and yet there is still one more day of work. With these thoughts about Thursdays in mind, you may have noticed here on the blog, we have a recurring post that is both a mix of fun and a little bit of serious. Thursday is “L” day. Every week, [...]
