If I am honest, one of things I have struggled with the most in life, is the fear of what other people think about me. On Monday, I talked about how fears like mine can often hold us back from fully being who God has created us to be. Today, for our “Love” I share a movie that speaks to identity, and for “Learn,” I share a podcast in which a creative talks about fear. And, at the end I throw in a quote about leadership. If you could relate to Monday’s post, I hope you enjoy this one.
Love
My husband and I rarely go to the movies. With a few exceptions for long awaited films, we always rent (we don’t even stream yet). So, if I ever talk about a movie on the blog that is still in the theater, it will be a very special occasion. That being said, every now and then, I will share a movie recommendation to rent/stream. And today’s would be the movie, Lion.
I know, chances are if you go to the movies, you have already seen it. But if you haven’t, and you like sweeping, epic films that are based on true stories, and are set in other countries, then I have just given you an idea of what to watch this weekend!
In Lion, a young boy Saroo is separated from his family, and finds himself lost on the streets of Calcutta, India. Eventually he is put in an orphanage where he is adopted by a family in Australia. Half of the movie is about this part of his childhood, and then it flashes forward to him as a young man (played by Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire), seeking to find out what happened to his family. At times it is hard to watch, but overall it is a beautiful film about family, identity, and love.
What movies would you recommend I rent this weekend?
Learn
One of the most challenging aspects of following our dreams or seeking to use the gifts God has given us to the fullest, is fear. We all have it, and often the only thing that separates those who “make it” and those who don’t, is what we do with it. That is why I love listening to other creatives or people who are in the top of their field, talk about their experiences with fear. It almost gives us a roadmap on how to work through our own fear.
Recently, singer/songwriter David Barnes was interviewed on the Story Podcast, and in it talks about his journey as an artist and how he has worked through his fears. A songwriter for artists such as Blake Shelton and Tim McGraw, as well as a longtime singer and performer, Barnes also talks about how challenging it is to distinguish between our art and our identity.
This episode is an important listen if you are on the edge of pursuing one of your dreams, yet fear is holding you back. A YouTube comic on the side, Barnes goes deep but then lightens up the conversation, making it also an entertaining listen. To hear it for yourself, click here.
