It’s All The In Shaking, Finding Balance part 1

Deep breath. We have made it to the second week of January. The Holidays are sadly over, and we are back to our regular schedules. Only, getting back into a routine after such a busy season, can be difficult (especially, if it involves a stomach bug). In fact, I struggled with it for years until yoga taught me something important about finding and keeping a balanced life. If you’ve ever done yoga, you know there is typically a portion of every session dedicated to physical balance. For one of the more common moves, Tree, the instructor has you stand on [...]

Lead a Wonderful Life

Every family has their traditions over the Holidays. Growing up, Christmas Eve became the time my immediate family celebrated ours. It usually involved making a bunch of fun snacks that we would eat instead of dinner. Then we’d open presents, and after, watch a Christmas movie while eating a Friendly’s ice cream roll. One year, my dad introduced us to the 1946 movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Though I was young and not used to watching things in black and white, I liked it. And it continues to be a movie that I watch almost yearly. However, as I get [...]

Waiting…With Expectation

Do you remember that feeling you got as a kid, on Christmas Eve? Trying to go to sleep, knowing that when you woke up, there would be presents under the tree? When I think about the anxious excitement that used to surge through me, I can almost feel it in my chest. That feeling of joyous expectation is hard to forget. The thing is, as children, we felt it a lot more. Birthdays, 4th of July  Fireworks, parties, or field trips, all fueled our childhood sense of wonder. And Christmas was the excitement of all of those things, rolled into [...]

Stuck on Replay

Christmas of my ninth grade year, my best friend gave me a VHS copy of the movie Little Women (with Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon). Being a reader and an aspiring writer, it easily became one of my favorite movies. I watched it over and over. Eventually though, I got sick of the “bad” parts in the story—Amy being a brat, Jo denying Laurie, Beth getting sick, etc., so I began to fast forward past them. In a sitting, I would go through the whole movie, only viewing the good parts. I watched Jo and Laurie dancing outside the ballroom, [...]

Waiting at Christmas

This past November, just after Halloween, the stores set up their Christmas displays. Though what is known as the “Christmas Creep” has been happening for quite a few years now, I almost found it shocking. One afternoon, I was doing my grocery shopping, turned a corner, and found myself in Santa’s Workshop. All I could see was red and green, and everything within me seemed to say: It’s too soon. Christmas is such a wonderful and celebratory time of year. It’s a time of giving, going to parties, being with our loved ones, and for those of us who believe, [...]

Sometimes, We Light Candles

“Cause baby, you’re a firework, come on let your colors burn…let’m go awe, awe, awe, as they shoot across the sky-ay-ay…” A couple of years ago, Katy Perry’s song, Firework, was one I turned up the volume for when I was in the car. I liked its message of throwing off whatever was keeping you from being yourself. However since then, I have begun rethinking my attachment to it. Thanks to a conversation I had about a year ago with a young leader, I am realizing that using a firework to describe ourselves, may be too short-lived of a metaphor. [...]

Love: Thanksgiving

When I was in the eighth grade, my English teacher had us write a story about Thanksgiving that had to include two of our family recipes. The idea was that we were to use the details from the recipes to describe making our turkey dinner. Having still a limited amount of experience in the Kitchen, this meant I had to sit down with my mom and go over her recipes. First we picked out two: Butternut Squash and Creamed Onions. Then, my mom went over how to chopped up the squash to cook it down, and how to make a [...]

Not So Thankful

Seven years ago this week, I made Thanksgiving dinner for the first time, and it was fun! It wasn’t stressful like it can be for so many—partly, because the total people coming, including me, was four. But also because that year excitement and gratitude seemed to be everywhere. It was in the air I breathed. It was bubbling up inside of me. I was in love. That year, I had started dating my now husband. After bumping into each other for over two years, we finally connected and discovered that like two pieces of a puzzle, we fit. We had a [...]

Love Learn Lead November 10, 2016

On Tuesday night, like sportscasters tracking the plays of the Super Bowl, newscasters on every station sat at big fancy glass tables, and announced the election results state by state. But unlike the Super Bowl, this wasn’t a game. The “winners” role can’t be limited to a celebratory Facebook post and wearing their team’s jersey for a week. Nor, can the “losers” just go home to lick their wounds, or pretend it didn’t happen. Because, whether we will admit it or not, we are all on the same team. It is clear we don’t all agree on how our country [...]

Hopefully, I’m Rising

Almost five years ago, I was newly unemployed. I had left an amazing job in an unhealthy work environment, and knew that before moving on to my next job, I would have to take some time to heal (I had no idea how long I would be without a job). Being very aware of the things I had gone through, my husband was fully supportive of me taking some time off. He only said that if I wasn’t going to be working, then I had to do something. So I learned how to bake bread. It all started one day, [...]
