Setting Our Intentions For Fall

Sometimes, the things that seem so simple—or perhaps even, silly—are those we need most to do in life. Brush your teeth. Make your bed. Drink plenty of water. Wash your hands. All of these examples have become obvious necessities in our culture. Yet, with some of them we still struggle. Maybe it’s because we don’t like being told what to do. Maybe it’s that life is too busy to pull the covers over our bed in the morning. Or, who has the time to make sure they’re drinking sixty-four ounces of water a day? Only deep down, we all know [...]

Three Lies We Believe About Exercise

At the beginning of this summer, Tony pulled out our bikes. He dusted them off, pumped up the tires, and loaded them on the back of our car. Then, for a few weekends in a row, we hit some of our local trails. It had been a few years since we had been biking, and I’d forgotten how much fun it can be.  Each ride, we went for a longer distance than we had before. We found a trail nearby that is mostly paved and shaded, which became our favorite. Tony and I were having a great time and I [...]

Trouble with Self Care? Start With Scrambled Eggs

Often, the first thing to go when I hit a busy season, or we return from a trip, is exercise. Though I’d also say it’s tied with maintaining a healthy diet. Once our routines are interrupted, Tony and I seem to gravitate more easily toward snack foods and the couch, than our running shoes and a protein packed smoothie. This makes the summer a perfect time for us to slack off when it comes to taking care of ourselves. And, I have a feeling, we’re not alone. But, fall is coming. Once our routines are interrupted, Tony and I seem [...]

Love Learn Lead August 8, 2019

In my previous life, ok about eight years ago, I was a youth pastor. For part of my job, a couple of times a year, I would take a group of teens on trips. Sometimes they were mission trips to other countries, during the winters it was weekend retreats, and for a few summers we used to take over a hundred teenagers on a four day camping trip to a music festival. You read that right, over a hundred students. I am sure there are ministries who have much bigger groups than we did, but it was quite an undertaking. [...]

Back to Basics (Before the Fall)

Two weeks ago, I ran into Target to pick up a few things. I worked my way through the personal care and grocery sections. Then, as I came around a corner, there it was: the back to school section.  It was only the middle of July, and Target was telling me to get ready for fall. Now, I could go on and on about how stores are always trying to push us into the next season. Putting Christmas candy out the day after Halloween, putting Easter Candy out the day after Valentine’s Day, etc. But when they put up these [...]

My Summer Bucket List

“Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds.” —Regina Brett Friends, can you believe it is the first day of August? My mind can’t even wrap itself around this fact. Though this means we technically have seven weeks left of summer, it feels like we only have four. Many of us have a fall schedule that begins when September does, cutting our summers short. In other words,  Summer is going to be [...]

What If…It’s Good?

Recently, one night after work, Tony was working out to a video he was streaming in our living room. I was making dinner, and not paying much attention. But then, after putting our meal in the oven, I started scrolling through Instagram. And, as it is so easy to do, I began half listening to the workout instructor as he started to lead Tony and his online audience through cool down. Following stretching and some time in Savasana, he said, “Now picture what success looks like for you today. Then imagine yourself succeeding.” At these words, I almost laughed out [...]

Five Great Ways To Connect With Friends

A few years ago, I remember going to the movies with a new friend. We had both realized we were reading the same book in hopes of finishing it in time to see the movie when it came out in theaters. So, we decided to go see the movie together.  The week it came out, we got to the theater really early. As the two of us sat in our seats, in the dark, waiting for the previews to start, all of a sudden, I felt nervous. What are we going to talk about? I began to wonder. Then I [...]

Five Date Ideas to Keep the Romance Alive

When you first fall in love, almost anything can be considered an amazing date because you’re together. Going to the movies, eating leftover Chinese food, hanging out at each other’s places—heck, even grocery shopping is fun. But what about when you’ve been married for a while, and curling up on the couch to binge Netflix, starts to get old?  As we talked about in Monday’s post, with all of our real life responsibilities, it can be difficult to make time for each other. And it can be easy for us to fall into ruts romantically. To count our time in [...]

Does Your Marriage Need a Chore Chart?

You know you had one. Whether it was in your head or your diary, posted on your mirror or hidden deep in your heart—when you were single, you had a list. Though it maybe embarrassing to admit now, because as least at one point it described a movie star more than anyone you knew in real life, you had one.  You had a list of what you were looking for in a spouse.  Tall or short, athletic or nerdy, you had some sort of picture in your head of who you wanted to marry. Maybe even down to what color [...]
